The rain that day consisted of a mixture of water and milk. The idea was it would it show up better on film but it caused Gene Kelly’s wool suit to shrink. Small wonder as the scene was not shot in one take. For the record, Gene Kelly had the flu at the time. Bet he spent a long time in a hot tub afterwards.
