Mencken & Cleese on Democracy (& the talking parrot)
At the bottom of my email I often use the following HL Mencken quote:
“As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.” — H.L. Mencken (1880-1956)
Looks like John Cleese is endorsing this jaundiced view of democracy too, though these last weeks have brought some sense that a majority of the American people may now be ready to get the moron out of the White House and back to his Out House. Alleluia!:
