XUL & Souffles

Ernesto Livon-Grosman just announced that Boston College has uploaded the first two components of XULdigital . These include a digital edition of the complete journal XUL: Signo viejo y nuevo and The XUL Reader. The third component, 5 + 5, which includes five critical articles in Spanish and five in English will be completed by the end of this calendar year. The present site is fully searchable in Spanish and English and all the issues can be downloaded in part or as whole directly from its archival edition located here.

One of the great advantages of the net is to make such full runs of magazines available — complete electronic reproduction is, I think, much more useful than a reset, reprint of “the best” of a magazine in a new anthology or book, where the loss of the original context (inclusing type-faces, layout, size, paper quality, surrounding visuals, poems, essays, & reviews) is often more or less absolute — and debilitating. For when such editions of The Black Mountain Review, Origin, some/thing, Matter, Caterpillar, Spanner, etcetera — to mention only English language publications?

Right now there is at least one other such essential e-repro available which I go to often: the Moroccan magazine Souffles edited by Abdellatif Laâbi from 1966 to 1971, and then stopped by the Moroccan authorities for publishing subversive writings — for which Laâbi was jailed from 1972 to 1980:
