Working on the later poem &#8220;Als uns das Wei\u00dfe anfiel | When whiteness assailed us&#8221; I noticed that the opening phrase of the 1962 poem has been picked up and made part of the later poem. Here I propose a first translation\u00a0of this earlier poem. (The later one will be part of my <em>The Later Collected Poems of Paul Celan<\/em> to be published next year). Note that Celan\u2019s play on the homophonic words \u201cmehr\u201d = \u201cmore\u201d and \u201cMeer\u201d = \u201csea\u201d is lost in translation):<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When from the libation-ewer more<br \/>\nthan water came. When<br \/>\npus came after the more.<br \/>\nAnd more than pus. When<br \/>\nthe sea also<br \/>\nhad come, then<\/p>\n<p>a breath braided a face that was<br \/>\nsharp as the newly<br \/>\nborn keel, standing upward, ready to travel, into<br \/>\nthe other sea \u2014 the one<br \/>\nwith the splinter and signs<br \/>\nand the signsplinters.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t say there was<br \/>\nno lid<br \/>\nabove the pair of eyes in<br \/>\nthat face.<br \/>\nThere were flightlids, lashed, the gazes<br \/>\nhad their tent.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following poem was written 12.15.1962, during the period of composition of Die Niemandsrose, though not taken into that volume.
