He writes in French.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span>UAlbany English Professor, translator of Tengour, and 2005 winner of the PEN Poetry in Translation prize, Pierre Joris has called Tengour, \u201cone of the Maghreb\u2019s most forceful and visionary poetic voices of the post-colonial era.\u201d <\/span><span>Regina Keil-Sagawe, author of a book-length study on Tengour\u2019s work, writes: \u201cThe double vision of poet and ethnologist achieves surprising symbioses, for Tengour, the cynical observer of his society, proposes through his narratives a fragmented chronicle of post-colonial Algeria under the dismal light of History or of myth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span>Tengour\u2019s works available in English translation include the poetry collection \u201cEmpedokles\u2019s Sandal\u201d (1999), and the narrative poem \u201cThe Old Man of the Mountain,\u201d contained in Pierre Joris\u2019 book <em>4X1<\/em> (2003). The poem sequence \u201cCaf\u00e9 Marine\u201d is forthcoming in English in late 2009.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span>Author of an influential \u201cManifesto of Maghrebian Surrealism\u201d in 1981, Tengour explores Algerian cultural identity and memory as they are being \u201cmestizoed\u201d and woven between Orient and Occident, especially under the impact of the experiences of exile and migration. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span>Major prose works include the trilogy <em>Le Vieux de la Montagne<\/em> (1983), <em>Sultan Galiev ou La Rupture des Stocks<\/em> (1982), &amp; <em>L\u2019Epreuve de l\u2019Arc<\/em> (1990), written in a form adapted from the Arabic \u201cmaqama\u201d genre mixing prose &amp; poetry; \u201cGens de Mosta\u201d (1997), a linked sequence of short stories; and the novel <em>Le Poisson de Mo\u00efse <\/em>(2001<em>)<\/em>.
