Today, according to some sources, is the 800 anniversary of the death of the poet\u00a0Nezami<\/a> or\u00a0Nez\u0101mi-ye Ganjavi, so-called because he was born in the city of Ganja, in the present-day Republic of Azerbaijan.\u00a0His \u00a0formal name was\u00a0Ni\u017c\u0101m ad-D\u012bn Ab\u016b Mu\u1e25ammad Ily\u0101s ibn-Y\u016bsuf ibn-Zak\u012b ibn-Mu\u2018ayyad, <\/em>and he is the author (shaper, rather, from a range of preexisting Arabic folk materials) of\u00a0\u00a0“Layla and Majnun<\/a>” \u2014 maybe the most popular of romantic epic poems\u2014 and four other such epics, plus a shorter body of qasidas and ghazals.
