Photograph: Howard Denner\/Getty<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body-blocks\">\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The saxophonist Lol Coxhill, who has died aged 79, was one of\u00a0the\u00a0great characters of\u00a0British music \u2013 generous, gifted and amiably eccentric. He\u00a0had long been a\u00a0stalwart of the European\u00a0<a title=\"More from guardian.co.uk on Jazz\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/music\/jazz\">jazz<\/a>\u00a0and improvised music scene, but he reached all kinds through his collaborations with a wide range of music \u2013 Afro-Cuban, R&amp;B, soul, progressive, punk, minimalist, electronic and beyond \u2013 while remaining recognisably himself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He achieved fame of sorts in the early 1970s with the crew of musicians surrounding the former Soft Machine songwriter Kevin Ayers, whose band the Whole World included the contemporary composer\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/music\/2011\/oct\/04\/david-bedford\">David Bedford<\/a>\u00a0and the teenage prodigy Mike Oldfield. Coxhill would turn up in all kinds of\u00a0situations \u2013 jam sessions, improv nights and playing solo soprano saxophone by Hungerford bridge on the Thames.
