Meanwhile thinking about poetry &amp; poetics \u2014 &amp; by chance (though that&#8217;s the wrong word) come across this little poem by Robert Kelly, from his book <em>The Time of Voice<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>THE ELEMENTS OF POETRY<\/p>\n<p>It should be formal as water<br \/>\nis, obedient<br \/>\nto every contour of what is<br \/>\nyet in generous authority<br \/>\nleave every surface changed by its touch.<\/p>\n<p>Formal as fire<br \/>\nsustained by what it consumes \u2014<br \/>\nyour memories and desires flame<br \/>\nsuddenly in the tinder of the text,<br \/>\nyour breath the oxygen it needs.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lovely lazy Sunday morning, warm, slightly humid &amp; possibly the\u00a0first\u00a0one of the summer will need the hum of the a.c.
