{"id":8424,"date":"2012-06-04T08:28:22","date_gmt":"2012-06-04T12:28:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pierrejoris.com\/blog\/?p=8424"},"modified":"2012-06-04T08:28:22","modified_gmt":"2012-06-04T12:28:22","slug":"euro-mediterranean-translation-a-mapping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pierrejoris.com\/blog\/euro-mediterranean-translation-a-mapping\/","title":{"rendered":"Euro-Mediterranean Translation: a Mapping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pierrejoris.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/mappingtranslation-e1338723763782.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8425 lazyload\" title=\"mappingtranslation\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pierrejoris.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/mappingtranslation-e1338723763782.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"490\" height=\"693\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 490px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 490\/693;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/arablit.wordpress.com\/\">Arab Literature (in English)<\/a><\/strong> brought my attention to this study of translation:<\/p>\n<table cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">\n<blockquote>\n<table cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"middle\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/arablit.wordpress.com\/2012\/06\/03\/mapping-translation-into-and-out-of-arabic\/\">Mapping Translation: Into and Out of\u00a0Arabic<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>by <a href=\"http:\/\/arablit.wordpress.com\/author\/mlynxqualey\/\">mlynxqualey<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The big study that resulted from a number of translation reports &#8212; into and out of Arabic, Turkish, and Hebrew &#8212; is now available on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.enpi-info.eu\/medportal\/news\/latest\/29142\/Anna-Lindh-Foundation:-spotlight-on-the-mapping-of-translation-in-the-Euro-Mediterranean-region\">Anna Lindh Foundation&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0website: <strong>&#8220;<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.euromedalex.org\/sites\/default\/files\/TE-TEM-GBweb-e-BAT.PDF\"><strong>A Mapping of Translation in the Euro-Mediterranean Region<\/strong><\/a><strong>.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Anna Lindh folks note in the release: &#8220;The study takes into account the entire chain of translation: writers, translators, publishers, booksellers, libraries, translation programmes, media, and covers literary translation in its broadest sense, including part of the translation of human and social sciences, as well as theatre and children&#8217;s literature.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I have only given it a first skim, but there is much to chew over and much that was expected.\u00a0It is certain that translation both\u00a0<em>out of<\/em> and <em>into<\/em> Arabic, for instance, is on the uptick, for different reasons. <em>Into<\/em>\u00a0Arabic, the range of private-sector operations doing translation has increased: &#8220;It is incontestable that translation into Arabic has been growing in the last decade in all domains.&#8221;\u00a0<em>Out of\u00a0<\/em>Arabic, well, you know.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>What&#8217;s being translated?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Translator-scholar Richard Jacquemond made an interesting point about translations <em>into<\/em>\u00a0Arabic, and that is that &#8220;non-fiction (&#8230;) dominates more and more,\u00a0that is to say, not only what bibliographies classify and a variety\u00a0of human and social sciences, but also what in French is called\u00a0the &#8216;livre pratique&#8217; or in English &#8216;self help books&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is not true in the reverse, where it is literature and religion that dominate translation\u00a0<em>out of\u00a0<\/em>Arabic.
