S. Kline (see a Kline\u2014 Mandelstam site <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poetryintranslation.com\/PITBR\/Russian\/Mandelstam.htm#_Toc485874621\">here<\/a>). Unhappily the attempt to reproduce rhyme schemes etc. simply kills the poem or at least diminishes it a lot, still it does give a narrative account of OM&#8217;s poem. Note also that Kline seems unaware of what is the most famous appearance of the &#8220;black sun&#8221; image: it&#8217;s central position in Paul Celan&#8217;s &#8220;Todefuge.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">This night is irredeemable.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Where you are, it is still bright.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">At the gates of Jerusalem,<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">a black sun is alight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The yellow sun is hurting,<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">sleep, baby, sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The Jews in the Temple\u2019s burning<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">buried my mother deep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Without rabbi, without blessing,<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">over her ashes, there,<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">the Jews in the Temple\u2019s burning<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">chanted the prayer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Over this mother,<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Israel\u2019s voice was sung.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I woke in a glittering cradle,<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">lit by a black sun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Note: Written in 1916 it glitters with a terrible prophecy.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The black sun recurs\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">as an image in Mandelshtam, associated also with Pushkin\u2019s burial at night and\u00a0 Euripides\u2019 \u2018Phaedra\u2019.
