The poet Angye Gaona has been charged formally by the Colombian\u00a0government prosecutors. \u00a0She is accused of “Rebellion” and “drug\u00a0trafficking.” \u00a0The prosecutors have indicated that this frame-up trial\u00a0will begin on 23 January 2012 at the special criminal court in\u00a0Cartagena de Indias.<\/p>\n

Angye Gaona is completely innocent of these charges! \u00a0But she is\u00a0considered a nuisance by the ultra-conservative government because her\u00a0writings, interviews, and speeches have had a considerable influence\u00a0on young Colombians. \u00a0But “crime” and “drug trafficking,” no, not at\u00a0all!<\/p>\n

Angye was unexpectedly arrested in January of last year without any\u00a0written or formal charge, but was released on caution in July after\u00a0much international pressure. \u00a0And, now, once again, she is completely\u00a0innocent of these frame-up charges and professional defamations!<\/p>\n

Angye Gaona, in a number of articles and interviews, has passionately\u00a0defended the cause of Colombian Indians, many of whom are being killed\u00a0by paramilitary gangs on orders of the land developers. \u00a0Angye has\u00a0denounced these mass-killings as “genocide.”<\/p>\n

Also, Angye has defended the cause of working class people and their\u00a0unions, who are constantly being repressed by the industrial\u00a0conglomerates in Colombia, supported by the government and its Yankee\u00a0sponsor. \u00a0Indeed, she has denounced the present Colombian government\u00a0as “a terrorist government.”<\/p>\n

If nothing is done, her trial may have a dramatic and tragic outcome.\u00a0Indeed, Colombia is known for its dreadful political trials. \u00a0At the\u00a0moment some 7,000 political prisoners serve long sentences in terrible\u00a0and overcrowded prisons.<\/p>\n

Therefore, it is necessary to try to make known to the Colombian\u00a0judiciary officials that Angye’s case is being followed closely\u00a0worldwide.<\/p>\n

At the moment, it is important that the examining judge receives many\u00a0letters, letters asking for a fair trial. \u00a0If you want to write such a\u00a0letter, the address is as follows …<\/p>\n
