After 42 years

Five years old when the dictator took over in a coup \u2014<\/p>\n

curfew shut our city down<\/p>\n

Bloodless coup, they said \u2014<\/p>\n

The many who thought this could be good.<\/p>\n

The dictator, a young man, a shy recluse assumed the helm, bent in piety,<\/p>\n

the dead sun of megalomania hidden in his eyes.<\/p>\n

Could not go to the store to buy bread or newspaper,<\/p>\n

could not leave home, visit friends,<\/p>\n

the radio thundering hatred, retching blood-curdling song \u2014<\/p>\n

Signs that went unread<\/p>\n

Factories built and filched, houses stolen, newspapers shut down,<\/p>\n

decades of people killed, 42 years.<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s all over now \u2014<\/p>\n

How can you say over when it took 42 years \u2014<\/p><\/div>\n
