Below a poem of his written 9 April 1999, reprinted today in the German newspaper <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taz.de\/1\/archiv\/digitaz\/artikel\/?ressort=tz&amp;dig=2010%2F12%2F28%2Fa0113&amp;cHash=8cb90f0867\">Tageszeitung<\/a> in a German translation by Martin Winter, on which I base my version.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Wait for me with the Dust<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>(For my wife, who is waiting for me)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s nothing left for you to do<br \/>\nbut wait for me with the dust.<br \/>\nLayer by layer<br \/>\nit fills the corners.<br \/>\nYou keep the curtains closed.<br \/>\nThe sun shall not disturb the dust.<\/p>\n<p>On the bookshelves the signs are vanishing in dust,<br \/>\nthe patterns in the carpet are gorged with dust.<br \/>\nWhen you write to me<br \/>\nyou like to dip the pen in\u00a0 dust,<br \/>\nits particles then prick my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>You sit there all day long<br \/>\nand don\u2019t want to move,<br \/>\nafraid your feet could hurt the dust.<br \/>\nBreathing very quietly<br \/>\nyou write a story with your silence<br \/>\nin these suffocating times.<br \/>\nOnly\u00a0 dust is still faithful to you.<\/p>\n<p>Dust fills<br \/>\nyour gaze, your breath, your time.<br \/>\nIn your soul<br \/>\nit builds a grave day by day,<br \/>\ninch by inch,<br \/>\nstarting at your feet it<br \/>\nreaches chest and throat.<\/p>\n<p>You know that the grave<br \/>\nis your best refuge.<br \/>\nNobody bothers you<br \/>\nif you wait for me there.<\/p>\n<p>You obviously have a special relation to dust<br \/>\nin the darkness in the suffocating stillness,<br \/>\nwait, please wait for me.<\/p>\n<p>Wait for me with the dust,<br \/>\nrefuse the sun, the flow of air,<br \/>\nuntil the dust buries you completely.<br \/>\nFall asleep in the dust<br \/>\nuntil you wake up<br \/>\nwhen I\u2019ll have returned,<br \/>\nyou\u2019ll wipe the dust from your skin, from your soul<br \/>\nand you&#8217;ll stand up, like a miracle.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today is Chinese poet, writer, activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiabobo&#8216;s 55th birthday, which he &#8216;celebrates&#8217; in jail.
