<em>Ursonate<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Nicole Peyrafitte, <\/strong> will\u00a0sing stanzas using the poem of <strong>Robert Kelly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pierre Menard Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition <strong><em>Imagine It Thick In Your Own Hair, <\/em><\/strong>a benefit for victims of the oil spill<strong> <\/strong>by <strong>Heide Hatry<\/strong> in conjunction with a silent auction of work by numerous artists.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The exhibition <em>Imagine It Thick In Your Own Hair<\/em> includes paintings, sculptures and artist books by artist and curator Heide Hatry.\u00a0 Some of the work in the current exhibition includes actual animals such as birds, opossums, rats and mice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Using road kill and found animal corpses<\/strong>, Hatry created scenes suggestive of what is happening in the Gulf of Mexico today.\u00a0 Her pigments are actual oil and tar and other \u201corganic\u201d materials that are the substance of the disaster.\u00a0 Life is a circle.\u00a0 Even the repugnant oil that is responsible for destroying life and land was once living animals and plants itself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The show <strong>is intended to evoke the tragedy being visited upon earth<\/strong> and sea that is choking its life from it right now<strong> and to motivate people to help<\/strong>.\u00a0 It is difficult to not look away when you see an actual animal suffering, and Hatry wants, as she always does in her work, to demand awareness by putting the harsh truth directly in front of the viewer, unmitigated by distance.\u00a0 The show is a benefit exhibition, and the proceeds from sales will be used to support the <strong>Audubon Gulf Oil Response <\/strong>the principal organization assisting the wildlife of the Gulf region.\u00a0 The effort will be supplemented by a <strong>silent auction <\/strong>of work by various artists <strong>(<\/strong><strong>Heide Hatry, Ant\u00f3n Lamazares, Rosamond Purcell, Aldo Tambellini, Thordi Adalsteinsdottir, Larry Deyab, Rikki Ducornet,\u00a0Martin Mugar,\u00a0Nick Kilmer, Jan Harrison, Phyllis Ewen, Liz Insogna,\u00a0Christopher Reiger, Leemour Pelli, Iris Schieferstein,<\/strong> <strong>Nick Lawrence, Wilfredo Chiesa, Richard Human, Marc Wiener, Yuliya Lanina, and many more).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hatry has created several unique artist\u2019s books for the current exhibition in conjunction with poet <strong>Robert Kelly<\/strong>, whose poem,<strong> \u201cImagine It Thick In Your Own Hair\u201d<\/strong>, provides the show\u2019s title and with poet <strong>Franz Wright<\/strong>.\u00a0 Both works are previously unpublished.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<blockquote>\n<pre style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 11pt;\">Imagine it thick in your own hair\nyour eyes stuck shut\n\nyou gouge your scummy finger\nin your nose to break a way for air\nthe black snot won\u2019t come out\nyou breathe a little, it whistles\nit\u2019s in your eyes now, burning\nand your ears are stuffed with sludge now too\nyou can\u2019t even hear yourself scream\n\nand while you\u2019re screaming\nyou\u2019re thinking\nif you can still think\nthat all this oil was leaf and meadow once,\nturf and forest waving\nmillions and millions of years\n\nall this was green life once\nand even now the glistening black sludge\nhas a sheen of tree-brown in it\na sheen of green\u2014\n\nforget the pelicans and pretty ducks,\nthis is happening to you\n\nyou are the one\nsealed in scum\n\nyou feel your scalp aching\nyour head trying to breathe\ndid you know we breathe through the skin?\nonly you can\u2019t, not any more,\nnever again,\n\nyour skin belongs to business now\nthis is the Midas touch of money\nthey trade in your skin on the bourse,\nthere is nothing left of the original you\nyou still are screaming\nyou make hardly any noise\nyour throat is choked with oil\nyou make only a little shushing noise\nlike money changing hands\n\nyou still worry about he pelicans and the sea turtles\nyou worry about the ducks and cormorants\nthe beautiful anhinga\nbut this is happening to you\n\na tar-black seagull\nwings still flapping\nis stuck to your shoulders\n\nyou can\u2019t breathe any more\nyou pray for the pelicans\nare you praying for them or to them\nand you are the pelican now\n                                                     Robert Kelly<\/pre>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Lutz Rath<\/strong>, German performance artist and cellist from New York will perform the first movement of collage artist <strong>Kurt Schwitters&#8217; <em>Ursonate<\/em><\/strong>, a phonetic DADA poem using just consonants a vowels based on the German alphabet without a single word. \u00a0<em>Ursonate<\/em> was written\u00a0between 1922 and 1932\u00a0during the confusion of the Weimar Republic and the dawn of the Nazi era. A work of art of wordless, noisy, powerful criticism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Nicole Peyrafitte, <\/strong>Franco-American multimedia performance artist from New York\u00a0will\u00a0sing stanzas using the poem of <strong>Robert Kelly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Heide Hatry<\/strong> is a German visual artist and curator. She studied art at various art schools and art history at the University of Heidelberg.
