Newton  had viewed color as a physical problem, involving light striking objects  and entering our eyes. Goethe realizes that the sensations of color  reaching our brain are also shaped by our perception \u2014 by the mechanics  of human vision and by the way our brains process information.  Therefore, according to Goethe, what we see of an object depends upon  the object, the lighting and our perception.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Goethe seeks to derive laws of color harmony, ways of characterizing  physiological colors (how colors affect us) and subjective visual  phenomena in general. Goethe studies after-images, colored shadows and  complementary colors. And he anticipates Hering\u2019s \u201copponent-color\u201d  theory, which is one basis of our understanding of color vision today. The article starts with the following paragraphs:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><strong>Theory of Colours<\/strong><\/em> (original <a title=\"German  language\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/German_language\">German<\/a> title, <em><strong>Zur Farbenlehre<\/strong><\/em>) is a book by <a title=\"Johann Wolfgang von Goethe\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johann_Wolfgang_von_Goethe\">Johann Wolfgang von Goethe<\/a> published in 1810. It contains some of the earliest published  descriptions of phenomena such as coloured shadows, <a title=\"Refraction\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Refraction\">refraction<\/a>,  and <a title=\"Chromatic aberration\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chromatic_aberration\">chromatic aberration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Its influence extends primarily to the art world, especially among  the <a title=\"Pre-Raphaelites\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pre-Raphaelites\">Pre-Raphaelites<\/a>. <a title=\"J. M. W.  Turner\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J._M._W._Turner\">J. M. W. Turner<\/a> studied it comprehensively, and referenced  it in the titles of several paintings (Bockemuhl, 1991<sup id=\"cite_ref-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Theory_of_Colours_%28book%29#cite_note-0\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>).  <a title=\"Wassily  Kandinsky\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wassily_Kandinsky\">Wassily Kandinsky<\/a> considered Goethe&#8217;s theory &#8220;one of the  most important works.&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Theory_of_Colours_%28book%29#cite_note-1\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although Goethe&#8217;s work was never well received by physicists, a  number of philosophers and physicists have been known to have concerned  themselves with it, including <a title=\"On  Vision and Colors\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_Vision_and_Colors\">Arthur Schopenhauer<\/a>, <a title=\"Kurt G\u00f6del\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kurt_G%C3%B6del\">Kurt  G\u00f6del<\/a>, <a title=\"Werner Heisenberg\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Werner_Heisenberg\">Werner Heisenberg<\/a>, <a title=\"Ludwig  Wittgenstein\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ludwig_Wittgenstein\">Ludwig Wittgenstein<\/a>, and <a title=\"Hermann  von Helmholtz\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hermann_von_Helmholtz\">Hermann von Helmholtz<\/a>. <a title=\"Mitchell  Feigenbaum\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mitchell_Feigenbaum\">Mitchell Feigenbaum<\/a> had even convinced himself that  &#8216;Goethe had been right about colour!&#8217; (Ribe &amp; Steinle, 2002<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Theory_of_Colours_%28book%29#cite_note-2\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In his book, Goethe provides a general exposition of how <a title=\"Colour\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colour\">colour<\/a> is perceived in a variety of  circumstances, and considers <a title=\"Isaac Newton\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Isaac_Newton\">Isaac  Newton<\/a>&#8216;s observations to be special cases.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Theory_of_Colours_%28book%29#cite_note-3\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> Goethe&#8217;s concern was not so much with the analytic measurement of  colour phenomenon, as with the qualities of how phenomena are perceived.
