24. captivity (inqiyad)<\/span><\/p>\n


<\/span>
<\/span>does it come before
<\/span>or after the nativity?
<\/span>
<\/span>is it the artist or the audience?
<\/span>the ox or the manger?
<\/span>
<\/span>is that Jackson I hear
<\/span>saying \u201cSchwitters\u201d?
<\/span>
<\/span>that was real applause
<\/span>not just captive apple sauce.
<\/span>
<\/span>& don\u2019t you come with
<\/span>that inequity stuff,
<\/span>
<\/span>we do what we do
<\/span>peculiar, fast & witty.
<\/span>
<\/span>\u201ccashmere\u201d would be great
<\/span>to pace the yard in
<\/span>
<\/span>captivity. or the streets
<\/span>of an old native city.
<\/span>
<\/span>you are on loan wherever
<\/span>you are, the museums
<\/span>
<\/span>have handed you back to
<\/span>the streets, less menac\u00e9es
<\/span>
<\/span>than he would have you believe.
<\/span>this is not a charade
<\/span>
<\/span>though not a nativity story
<\/span>either. capacitors are useful
<\/span>
<\/span>even if the jar is back home in
<\/span>Leyden, held captive
<\/span>
<\/span>between two plates that
<\/span>conduct themselves badly
<\/span>
<\/span>& have to be separated by mica,
<\/span>oil, paper or tantalum,
<\/span>
<\/span>a rare yet lustrous transition
<\/span>metal, not named after the man
<\/span>
<\/span>Tantalus who was from all over
<\/span>the place if you read the ancients
<\/span>
<\/span>until set down in captivity
<\/span>in the deepest layer of Tartarus
<\/span>
<\/span>for ripping some food & wine
<\/span>off his father\u2019s table. bad
<\/span>
<\/span>manners will always get you
<\/span>into one desert or another.
<\/span>
<\/span>sacrificing a son won\u2019t let you
<\/span>off the hook, however. leave that to
<\/span>
<\/span>the shamans, they\u2019re buddy buddy
<\/span>with mystic death and transfiguration.
<\/span>
<\/span>& know that you can\u2019t steal a dog:
<\/span>they just keep after you, wanted or not
<\/span>
<\/span>& you may never know if they got the scent
<\/span>off that cashmere sweater. keep to cats. or
<\/span>
<\/span>stay in the desert: there\u2019s no fruit tree,
<\/span>no pool of water, no low branches to
<\/span>
<\/span>tempt you. a H\u00f6lderlin poem with a
<\/span>drunken swan keeps coming up
<\/span>
<\/span>in your dream. a forewarning or
<\/span>a rapt image of paradise. don\u2019t let it go.
