\"\"One hundred years ago the first issue of Der Sturm<\/strong>, the great avant-garde magazine edited by Herwarth Walden<\/a> in Berlin appeared (well, to be exact it was on 3 March 1910). Der Sturm<\/strong><\/em> (German<\/a>: The Storm<\/em>) was a magazine of expressionism<\/a> founded in Berlin<\/a> in 1910 by. Originally running weekly, and then monthly in 1914, it became a quarterly in 1924 until it ceased publication in 1932. Among the literary contributors were Peter Altenberg<\/a>, Max Brod<\/a>, Richard Dehmel<\/a>, Anatole France<\/a>, Knut Hamsun<\/a>, Arno Holz, Karl Kraus<\/a>, Selma Lagerl\u00f6f<\/a>, Adolf Loos<\/a>, Heinrich Mann<\/a>, Paul Scheerbart<\/a>, Ren\u00e9 Schickele. Der Sturm<\/em> consisted of pieces such as expressionistic dramas (i.e. from Hermann Essig<\/a> and August Stramm<\/a>), artistic portfolios (Oskar Kokoschka<\/a>), essays from artists (the Kandinsky Album<\/a>), and theoretical writings on art from Herwarth Walden<\/a>. The most well-known publications resulting from the magazine were the Sturmb\u00fccher<\/em> (storm-books), (e.g. Sturmb\u00fccher 1 and 2 were works of August Stramm \u2013 Sancta Susanna<\/em> und Rudiment\u00e4r<\/em>). Postcards were also created featuring the expressionistic, cubist, and abstract art of Franz Marc<\/a>, Wassily Kandinsky<\/a>, Oskar Kokoschka<\/a>, August Macke<\/a>, Gabriele M\u00fcnter<\/a>, Georg Schrimpf<\/a>, Maria Uhden, Rudolf Bauer<\/a> and others. The term Sturm<\/em> was branded by Walden to represent the way in which modern art was penetrating Germany at the time.<\/p>\n

Particularly in the time before outbreak of the World War I<\/a>, Der Sturm<\/em> played a crucial role in the French-German exchange of expressionist artists, which led to a special relationship between Berlin<\/a> and Paris<\/a>. Regularly, poems and other texts of French and\/or French-speaking expressionists were published (Guillaume Apollinaire<\/a>, Blaise Cendrars<\/a>, etc). This relationship was renewed after the war despite the hostilities between the two countries caused by the fighting.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
