I felt the readers of NOMADICS would want to read this:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>New York Times\u2019 Ethan Bronner\u2019s Conflict of Interest: Conversation with Bronner and Alternative News Sources <\/strong><strong> <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The Electronic Intifada has just broken the <a href=\"http:\/\/rs6.net\/tn.jsp?et=1102966046091&s=945&e=001cizy7m0JYBERKMTv1pDX8C8MwhQQW5zhjIXs4WmLQW5GF-WudSyLClzjdJP_wQ6rVrt589bf8NxqaKM86GoNpfiQXteUHidndAxrOLeHwutyqMP39BRHsp41697uU3AHopNGw4W6CEjWkNMgaOleqg==\">story<\/a> that the son of Ethan Bronner, the <em>New York Times<\/em> bureau chief for Israel-Palestine, has just joined the Israeli army. This is obviously a serious conflict of interest.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As <em>EI<\/em> points out, \u201c<em>The New York Times<\/em>\u2018 own \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/rs6.net\/tn.jsp?et=1102966046091&s=945&e=001cizy7m0JYBECkIHBKd9pElT_Nf77_UhiOVT9mFO2begClGUi541FkebIDwqlaB-f27dBjRaXLIhQAe26othwaUdN1c1TSHLTt_jiwe5KShLlnNpU77eeXtwSHSbo3PkuUDbeiQ9zXms=\">Company policy on Ethics in Journalism<\/a>\u2018 acknowledges that the activities of a journalist\u2019s family member may constitute a conflict of interest. It includes as an example, \u201cA brother or a daughter in a high-profile job on Wall Street might produce the appearance of conflict for a business reporter or editor.\u201d Such conflicts may on occasion require the staff member \u201cto withdraw from certain coverage.\u201d<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many of us have long noted the <em>Times<\/em>\u2018 Israel bias in its coverage and have been troubled by Bronner\u2019s Israeli-centric reporting. <strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2005 at If Americans Knew we did a <a href=\"http:\/\/rs6.net\/tn.jsp?et=1102966046091&s=945&e=001cizy7m0JYBHfykG2THVZyfB1s9O80hBec_hyNflkBf5w0w1MU0NyPZO7DtSLsGIMnFTPj3XFyAHEhhBwfGYyy47wqyfb320LVfqhiGcdMccintedKVDGywCtgBMz-qQQrxJvsF_jMW5d4ln3ALomRw==\">study<\/a> of the <em>New York Times<\/em> and found that in 2004 it had reported on Israeli children\u2019s deaths at a rate 7.3 times greater than it reported on Palestinian children\u2019s deaths. Moreover, this was probably just the tip of the iceberg; if the study had included additional study categories \u2014 such as amount of information per death, frequency of accompanying photograph, etc \u2014 I suspect the differential would have been even greater.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When we presented our study in detail to then <em>Times\u2019<\/em> ombudsman, \u201cReaders Representative\u201d Dan Okrent, he suggested that it would be impossible for the <em>New York Times<\/em> to find sufficient competent Arab-American journalists to hire to equal the competent Jewish-American reporters. <strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I was astonished by this statement. It may well be true that Jewish Americans work as journalists, particularly in major American media, in far higher proportions than members of other ethnic groups. However, there are many Arab and Muslim journalists of high competence and who have won such awards as the Pulitzer Prize; it seemed to me bizarre, and perhaps chauvinistic (Okrent is Jewish), not to be aware of this.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In his subsequent column discussing the <em>Times<\/em>\u2018 coverage of Israel-Palestine, Okrent made a fraudulent statement about what I had said in the meeting. I then contacted the <em>Times<\/em> over their defamatory error and demanded a retraction. I also wrote an <a href=\"http:\/\/rs6.net\/tn.jsp?et=1102966046091&s=945&e=001cizy7m0JYBHusBquq9fndTiaOPfGiZQGz7KQqxig28b7y7GHtyC6XT7wzR1t43OXfSqlcngEbniwLtqvFqrwOKBp6oLsBGuOunrhh-CqaZlkrsDUzPyGzUc7Qo18U6OJllhWnFxt1iQXp1_tEyrapA==\">article<\/a> revealing what had happened. At the bottom of his next column, Okrent told readers of my objection and gave the link to my article. Once again, he gave considerably more space \u2013 high up in the column \u2013 to Israel partisans.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Conversation with Bronner<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During this period I spoke by phone with Ethan Bronner, at that time deputy foreign editor for the <em>Times<\/em>.\u00a0 Bronner, like Okrent, said it would be impossible to find Arab-American or Muslim-American journalists to balance out the Jewish-American journalists working at the Times on this issue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Again, I was astonished. I said, \u201cEthan, how many people are we talking about? Three reporters?\u201d He corrected me: \u201ctwo.\u201d (I believe these were the numbers, though it\u2019s possible that I suggested four reporters and he corrected me to three; I\u2019d have to look back through notes buried in a file somewhere to ascertain the specific figures.)<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I have since occasionally written articles noting the <em>Times<\/em>\u2018 failure to adequately cover this issue. For example, in \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/rs6.net\/tn.jsp?et=1102966046091&s=945&e=001cizy7m0JYBEHZnoALL3MXbu7HTJM7Ouk_rybq3I5rEr9d8y0ArtdPFsOBbGWETij-zIeOsf0XpHIBkB3oCvjJzCoN_9LDLqmBQyARHBkUzy3cmIFrGw4RxVV6TaJ9MgZSA5Tr_MW61nIkxJ0KYGCIQ==\">Anatomy of a Cover-up: When a Mother Gets Killed Does She Make a Sound<\/a>,\u201d I describe a criminal tragedy that went largely uncovered by the US media. I noted that the <em>New York Times<\/em> reported it in the last two paragraphs of a 24-paragraph story.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Similarly, in another article, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/rs6.net\/tn.jsp?et=1102966046091&s=945&e=001cizy7m0JYBEZkTcZNYnLeATq6tq0cTwipZ6e55XnrZeusB5rX9aEqg5Yz8hAUcDjF3FX4crAAi6t80c6ZrrPrjExCocycm_Uq2W7eyfFWHQJA6_EmzzurGVtrvihNBX1fViDo3hf15R4tn-_c7Z5NFYiuNd00yee\">Just Another Mother Murdered<\/a>,\u201d I again found the US media ignoring a Palestinian tragedy. The <em>New York Times<\/em> had given it one sentence.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/rs6.net\/tn.jsp?et=1102966046091&s=945&e=001cizy7m0JYBFGT9gb483gHXtW0lQSx5jYnYUfG53_dxWRz03SGQTEo4jizM0fBpjeaqsW99B_9agST0hN9mtbVynKkMzHkT2mRE-Wscmc7mBPoQT1ACDbymkeXcz_T1Bg636EBBe9R4IJeU59FUwBFg==\">American Media Miss the Boat<\/a>,\u201d I describe how the <em>Times<\/em> and other American news outlets failed to report highly newsworthy information on the Israeli attack on a US Navy ship, the USS Liberty.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If I had the time I could write a multitude of such analyses.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There is a significant problem here. Bronner is part of it. It\u2019s time for the <em>New York Times<\/em> to begin to report on Israel-Palestine fully, accurately, and without Israeli spin. In the meantime, I suggest that people turn elsewhere for news.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Other Sources for News<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While many media critics note the disturbing concentration of media ownership in the US, they often fail to appreciate the numerous and growing number of alternative news sources available to Americans.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In our <a href=\"http:\/\/rs6.net\/tn.jsp?et=1102966046091&s=945&e=001cizy7m0JYBEpCXnM_89mRWtNKGyZKst-bwUKOsc_Uw2LZCUBfsBQh1bWW69ksLtzU1kQtd6h3D74_7QLw0y8bAa0judW5hPzpLUChwmpOGOsJWNSsm0kYC-qAQhnZxev\">almost-daily news site<\/a> we post significant stories on this issue not being covered by major media, utilizing a multitude of excellent news sources. Other groups have long provided such news compilations, including <a href=\"http:\/\/rs6.net\/tn.jsp?et=1102966046091&s=945&e=001cizy7m0JYBHWXRmMnuznip1RA9hGXSoENGMdSYwoArDk6FMccPjHvFcvoCtu5UcgYOaLzyvoehpSe0lSuFrsoV_vGlGPM5xIR91iYOMkjAAF4gL4Zrs0DMi01CKOQY9N\">Vermonters for a Just Peace in Palestine<\/a> and \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/rs6.net\/tn.jsp?et=1102966046091&s=945&e=001cizy7m0JYBGBrP-CqilWZMddVu6g9KdcWvhfgOE6hiNZBN-DCQLH9vR7ZPbh6_PhgfgPpedvnofjZ9hW1tdh8FDJLax1ediioQW809yR6xZ_uMQerXW6jJe1vci31j5xQCswwtlPu676p-Oq-LKhsg==\">Today in Palestine<\/a>.\u201d<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Palestinian media such as <a href=\"http:\/\/rs6.net\/tn.jsp?et=1102966046091&s=945&e=001cizy7m0JYBF8JE6Wf6st4vp_w-v_pD2FzIk_1iQsdVgCICCGJa9zeKlDo-66yMVbMAIYzyaFqeDJcusCeon2zdVupMIwtWUhWnJHYUX95Wvp-MNF9PL2noKiXDThJuBagN7GuYMP32c=\">Ma\u2019an News<\/a> (whose chief English editor was just seized and <a href=\"http:\/\/rs6.net\/tn.jsp?et=1102966046091&s=945&e=001cizy7m0JYBE6D5QfQE9SvlHhPGu2Kf6c_kVY52NMrD91DbReoi0wVKtC-f7huVQmezkqlleSrLbEkTJKCJMCwzWpPXlbNJjXp9N7YWl16s7LxDa3WvHhmN5TrkAtCI_gQKlpZ0pqpf36ACOal--INGekb6muPEquVe6tmf-Vg8BwpfSRwcPND-orSeTMR7w8\">deported<\/a> by Israel) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/rs6.net\/tn.jsp?et=1102966046091&s=945&e=001cizy7m0JYBHRqSaNKzLYARwfFsmEU2prheO1OTCMP-XXaqyHZ0Vq-x3Qf03Oqwb6L-23XjH7MWf6jGwBpCzkkTMuQmf1Ki7MY0uOIo1g71c=\">International Middle East Media Center<\/a> are excellent sources of daily news, as are the reports from the <a href=\"http:\/\/rs6.net\/tn.jsp?et=1102966046091&s=945&e=001cizy7m0JYBFFQM5tjo4f8hcsNflbZS_ZVVN18OYpI8n6Uhp5T6qaRtF2xUyU5SPX_CU5YxBk8KAwjfBHwy0JyjGMeuBYQaICS0zspcpG2acQUeHAO_C8sg==\">International Solidarity Movement<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/rs6.net\/tn.jsp?et=1102966046091&s=945&e=001cizy7m0JYBF79b0AWPeDEJxGhBYs_TN4snGGUF-CcKwT1FGvUAQmlUQrctzBPGiCspHmm5IjLwzkh3CB9t5L239XpD0-9whuMZ7p4uWYcZTqECgdxoS4bL2CnRssEV2Q\">Christian Peacemaker Teams<\/a>, and the webpages of such Palestinian villages as <a href=\"http:\/\/rs6.net\/tn.jsp?et=1102966046091&s=945&e=001cizy7m0JYBF-G-uThNiBcVow4VKiQUYHD-cyCDs19aKGMtnQyym4LXMtYP3gV832qoVBwVp6FWh3InUbBh0PDpmsOZUTx_JTfuS55k4CIkIzp5-K4hrvITjELp9dfY-roWCWhe4Jx1M=\">Bil\u2019in<\/a>. Often Israeli media have valuable articles; there are detailed reports from international agencies in the region such as the Red Cross, UN, etc; and the Palestinian Monitoring Group provides an invaluable <a href=\"http:\/\/rs6.net\/tn.jsp?et=1102966046091&s=945&e=001cizy7m0JYBFV7pVLspxYQ8nR2GdIs8utBN7A2U5B_PoBEaEXmHpDYDbQ-__O5x5pma95vfOoxmVGKFhU5fCySReqN-ZgUMJzUhZ7u6gQbZLIenKR2W7ssKJ2rbBYUYnsGInOUhp2FH_xp_QZ8xvP9-CZXV3b7rFi\">daily listing<\/a> of all the previous day\u2019s events.
