Check it out \u2014 I am of course immediately very taken by<strong> Charlotte Mandel<\/strong>l&#8217;s translation of <strong>Abdelwahab Meddeb<\/strong>&#8216;s <em>The Stranger Across<\/em>, but also fascinated by <strong>Tony Brinkley<\/strong> &amp; <strong>Raina Kostova<\/strong>&#8216;s translations of <strong>Osip Mandelshtam<\/strong> \u2014 to me, the most difficult of the Russian poets to bring over into English.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pierrejoris.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Ceriseissue1cover.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2085 lazyload\" title=\"Ceriseissue1cover\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pierrejoris.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Ceriseissue1cover-300x292.jpg\" alt=\"Ceriseissue1cover\" width=\"300\" height=\"292\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/292;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Just in from <strong>burning deck<\/strong>, <strong>Jean Daive<\/strong>&#8216;s memoir of <strong>Paul Celan<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.burningdeck.com\/catalog\/daive2.htm\"><em>Under the Dome: Walks with Paul Celan<\/em><\/a>, translated from the French by <strong>Rosmarie Waldrop<\/strong>. Gamoneda is one of the major Spanish poets of the the last half-century (he&#8217;s born in 1931) and, if I am not mistaken, this is the first of his collections available to US readers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pierrejoris.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Gamonedacover250.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2087 lazyload\" title=\"Gamonedacover250\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pierrejoris.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Gamonedacover250-187x300.jpg\" alt=\"Gamonedacover250\" width=\"187\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 187px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 187\/300;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Writes Jos\u00e9 Kozer on the back cover:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One should be glad for Gamoneda\u2019s belated recognition and simply shrug one\u2019s shoulders over the timing, since that seems to be the lot of great poets. One should concentrate on a poetry that \u201ctravels from the visible to the invisible\u201d and vice versa. A poetry not prone to expletives, resentment, nor the exploitation of personal grievances. A poetry that can deal with, in the words of Eduardo Mil\u00e1n, \u201cthe intimacy of exclusion\u201d objectively yet passionately, language transparent and yet complex.
