As an homage to his native country, he bequeathed the first of these to Luxembourg where one can visit it at the Chateau of Clervaux (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visit-clervaux.lu\/en\/art\/the-family-of-man\"><span class=\"s1\">https:\/\/www.visit-clervaux.lu\/en\/art\/the-family-of-man<\/span><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">A few years back I wrote the poem below (also included in my 2015 book <em>barzakh<\/em>) as an homage to Steichen &amp; his work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Letter to Steichen\u2019s Ed<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 360px;\"><i>In fact, every photograph is a fake from start to finish, a purely impersonal, unmanipulated photograph being practically impossible.<\/i> \u2014 Edward Steichen<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Leiwen Ed,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ech wees net ops du ons Sproch nach gekannt hues,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">that\u2019s why I\u2019ll address you in American English.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">You were born zu B\u00e9iwen, bei Roeser, in Luxembourg,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I was not<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">You were an American citizen,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I am still not,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I am just a plain citizen of Luxembourg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">You believed in the family of man<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I am weary of families of any order and species.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But you <i>are<\/i> family<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">in that photo by Dana those clear blue<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Luxembourg eyes exactly like cousin Lol\u2019s, the cut<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">of the face too, there\u2019s a resemblance, close to<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">the bone, close to the farm<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">a way in which the head<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">is held. High &amp; loose. You\u2019re my home-<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">boy of old, Ed, a<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">cousin, maybe even<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201ccousin germain\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">as the French wld say?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Now, you burned your paintings<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">when your gardener imitated one of yours \u2014<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">a strange act, a criticism of<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">the representation of representation, maybe?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Or just a cheap trick to prove Duchamp wrong<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">for saying \u201cstupide comme un peintre\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&amp; move on to the new technologies?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Now, I never burned a single poem<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">have kept them all,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">but then you had Carl Sandburg<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">in the family, devoted companion<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">for long walks &amp; writing for you<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I have always hated taking<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">photos but bought a camera at sixty<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">to shoot landscapes<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&amp; the family of one Joris<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&amp; half a dozen friends<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">but I always leave it home<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">or forget that it is in my pocket.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">You were a famous delphinium breeder<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I only brood over words<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">make poems &amp; make anthologies,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">weird cut flower bouquets<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I am in Albany NY &amp; sometimes<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">visit Buffalo where<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">you did avant-garde color autochromes<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">the year Ford introduced the model T-Ford<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">and one year after Picasso painted<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">his <i>Demoiselles<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ah the autochrome!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Hot off the 1903 minds<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">of the Fr\u00e8res Lumi\u00e8re,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">them I\u2019ve seen the Light Brothers,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">first marketed in our year 1907,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">it is an additive method<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">a process involving millions<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">of microscopic<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">grains of potato starch<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">(did you ever think of<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">the Luxembourg staple<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">food, <i>d\u2019gromper<\/i>, when you<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">loaded the camera?)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">dyed<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">bright blue-violet,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">bright orange-red<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&amp; Kelly green<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">dusted on a slightly concave piece of glass<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">already coated with liquid pitch mixed<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">with a dram of beeswax<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">to keep it \u201ctacky\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">the random spaces filled with lamp-black<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&amp; a panchromatic silver halide emulsion<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">the resultant screen<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">was stochastic in nature<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">a random array<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">an abstraction way beyond the <i>Demoiselles\u2019<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">demure cubism<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">though the light you let<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">pass through the photo-sensitive plate<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">coming off<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">your \u201csubjects\u201d, say Charlotte<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Spaulding in Buffalo,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">with the starch grains remaining as aligned<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">as the starch of her lacy dress<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">organized this randomness into<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">plain Edwardian beauty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ed, you were not Edwardian,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">you were just a Luxembourg lad<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">in America who made good<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&amp; moved with ease between<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Cond\u00e9 Nast &amp; this here place,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">fifty years before Warhol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If I am trying so hard to<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">understand this autochrome process<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">(of which you said \u201c no medium<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">can give me color of such<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">wonderful luminosity\u201d)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">it is because you also said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIf you don\u2019t take doors off their hinges,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">how are you going to know<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">to put doors back on their hinges?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Though that, cousin Ed,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">may be where we disagree:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">why put the doors back on<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">the hinges,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">beauty will bolt anyway,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">and all we are ever left with<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">is the beauty of doing the work,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">the handwork, the hands on work,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">your plates, my words.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Merci, cousin,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2018daz gut ze wessen<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">daz du hei wars virun mir.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Born in Bivange, Luxembourg on 27 March 1897, the young Edward emigrated to the US with his parents when he was 18.\u00a0 His was a long, varied &amp;
