At the UN Biodiversity Conference in Montr\u00e9al in December, your decisive action is needed to halt the man-made extinction of species and to strengthen biodiversity. The <i>10MustDos<\/i><i> <\/i>are intended to support you in taking such action by proposing solutions that can be implemented with immediate effect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p10\"><span class=\"s6\">The<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">report<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">of<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">the<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">Intergovernmental<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">Panel<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">on<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">Biodiversity <\/span>and Ecosystem Services<span class=\"s15\">2<\/span>, the Global Biodiversity Outlook<span class=\"s15\">3<\/span>, the first joint workshop report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services and the In<span class=\"s6\">tergovernmental<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">Panel<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">on<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">Climate<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">Change<\/span><span class=\"s16\">4<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">as<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">well<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">as<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">the <\/span>10 New Insights in Climate Science<span class=\"s15\">5<\/span> all emphasise that <span class=\"s6\">\u201csolving<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">the<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">dual<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">crises<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">of<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">climate<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">change<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">and<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">biodiversity <\/span>loss [is] essential to support human well-being\u201d<span class=\"s15\">6<\/span>. Climate change determines <i>how<\/i><i> <\/i>we live on this earth, biodiversity <i>whether<\/i><i> <\/i>we live on this earth. Climate and biodiversity protection are inseparable from each other<span class=\"s15\">7<\/span>. Finding ways to protect both climate and biodiversity generates benefits for all and is crucial for a successful path towards global social justice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p11\">In putting forward the <span class=\"s21\"><b>10MustDos<\/b><\/span>, we would like to strongly encourage all political actors to take measures to conserve and restore biodiversity and to address the pressures that threaten it. We would further like to encourage all concerned to take the step that leads to a great transformation towards a biodiversity-friendly and climate-compatible civilisation. <b>Biodiversity is a powerful<\/b><b> <\/b><b>lever<\/b><b> <\/b><b>to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals<\/b><b> <\/b><b>(SDGs)<\/b><span class=\"s15\"><b>8 <\/b><\/span><b>of<\/b><b> <\/b><b>the<\/b><b> <\/b><b>Agenda<\/b><b> <\/b><b>2030<\/b>. We have therefore identified for each MustDo which SDGs will be strengthened by implementing our recommendations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p13\">It is important to highlight that strengthening SDGs 14 (Life under water) and 15 (Life on land) has a strong positive impact and an <span class=\"s6\">added <\/span><span class=\"s6\">value<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">on<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">the<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">achievement<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">of<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">other<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">goals<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">(SCNAT,<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">2021)<\/span><span class=\"s16\">9<\/span><span class=\"s6\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p10\">The <span class=\"s21\"><b>10MustDos<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b>point out ways that can be pursued in a short-term and targeted manner. The outlined approaches suggest precise actions that halt the loss of habitats, species and genetic resources and thus contribute to achieving the internationally agreed targets of species and ecosystem recovery by 2030<span class=\"s15\">10,11,12<\/span> and the restoration of nature by 2050<span class=\"s15\">12<\/span>. Our approaches also contribute to achieving the goals of the UN Decade on ecosystem res- toration (2021-2030)<span class=\"s15\">13<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p16\">We are dependent on biodiversity in its breathtaking and vital abundance, on functioning terrestrial and marine ecosystems as well as on species-rich streams, rivers, lakes, peatlands, and groundwater. <b>Biodiversity<\/b><b> <\/b><b>is<\/b><b> <\/b><b>the foundation<\/b><b> <\/b><b>of<\/b><b> <\/b><b>our<\/b><b> <\/b><b>life,<\/b><b> <\/b><b>our<\/b><b> <\/b><b>health,<\/b><b> <\/b><b>our<\/b><b> <\/b><b>well-being<\/b><b> <\/b><b>and our<\/b><b> <\/b><b>future.<\/b><b> <\/b><b>It<\/b><b> <\/b><b>must<\/b><b> <\/b><b>therefore<\/b><b> <\/b><b>be<\/b><b> <\/b><b>protected<\/b><b> <\/b><b>by<\/b><b> <\/b><b>society as<\/b><b> <\/b><b>a<\/b><b> <\/b><b>whole<\/b><b> <\/b><b>and<\/b><b> <\/b><b>must<\/b><b> <\/b><b>be<\/b><b> <\/b><b>considered<\/b><b> <\/b><b>and<\/b><b> <\/b><b>anchored<\/b><b> <\/b><b>in<\/b><b> <\/b><b>all policy<\/b><b> <\/b><b>areas<\/b><b> <\/b><b>and<\/b><b> <\/b><b>sectors.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p16\">The significance of a cooperatively negotiated, well-funded and durable framework agreement on new global nature conservation goals (Post-2020 Global Bio- diversity Framework, 2022)<span class=\"s15\">14<\/span> was recently underlined at the Climate Change Conference in Egypt (COP27, 2022)<span class=\"s15\">15<\/span>. The <span class=\"s21\"><b>10MustDos <\/b><\/span>can be a valuable resource for the negotiations at the UN Biodiversity Conference in Montr\u00e9al (COP15, 2022)<span class=\"s15\">16<\/span>. But not only there! <b>Let\u2019s<\/b><b> <\/b><b>solve<\/b><b> <\/b><b>the<\/b><b> <\/b><b>biodi<\/b><span class=\"s7\"><b>versity, climate, and justice crisis, and build a life-sustain<\/b><\/span><b>ing<\/b><b> <\/b><b>civilisation.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p17\"><b><\/b><b> <\/b><strong><span class=\"s28\">MustDo<\/span> <\/strong><span class=\"s30\"><b>1:<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><b>Did you<\/b><b> <\/b><b>know<\/b><b> <\/b><b>that<\/b><b> <\/b><b>in<\/b><b> <\/b><b>the<\/b><b> <\/b><b>past<\/b><b> <\/b><b>10<\/b><b> <\/b><b>years,<\/b><b> <\/b><b>about<\/b><b> <\/b><b>55%<\/b><b> <\/b><b>of<\/b><b> <\/b><b>the<\/b><b> <\/b><b>anthropogenic<\/b><b> <\/b><span class=\"s6\"><b>green<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s21\"><b>house gas carbon dioxide has been absorbed by all terrestrial ecosystems and the oceans<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s35\"><b>1<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s21\"><b>? <\/b><\/span><b>We support the<\/b><b> <\/b><b>demand<\/b><b> <\/b>to protect 30% of land and sea areas by 2030<span class=\"s39\">2<\/span>, to designate a further 20% as climate stabilisa- tion areas<span class=\"s39\">3<\/span> (where protection does not necessarily preclude sustainable management), and to restore a billion hectares of degraded ecosystems worldwide. These measures could correspond to <span class=\"s44\">1<\/span><span class=\"s19\">\/<\/span><span class=\"s45\">3<\/span> of the activities <span class=\"s6\">required <\/span>to limit the global temperature increase to well below 2 de- grees Celcius by 2100 and to conserve <span class=\"s48\">2<\/span>\/<span class=\"s49\">3<\/span> of the species that are severely threatened with extinction<span class=\"s39\">4<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p21\"><b><span class=\"s52\">MustDo <\/span><span class=\"s53\">2: <\/span>Did<\/b><b> <\/b><b>you<\/b><b> <\/b><b>know<\/b><b> <\/b><b>that<\/b><b> <\/b><b>spending<\/b><b> <\/b><b>2<\/b><b> <\/b><b>hours<\/b><b> <\/b><b>a<\/b><b> <\/b><b>week<\/b><b> <\/b><b>in<\/b><b> <\/b><b>nature<\/b><b> <\/b><b>increases<\/b><b> <\/b><b>your<\/b><b> <\/b><b>health<\/b><b> <\/b><b>and<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>well-being<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s35\"><b>1<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s21\"><b>?<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><b>We<\/b><b> <\/b><b>call<\/b><b> <\/b><b>for<\/b><b> <\/b>the consistent promotion and integration of biodiversity in urban areas, where already more than half of the world\u2018s population is living today. This strengthens the health of humans, animals, and the environment<span class=\"s39\">2<\/span>. Nature-based solutions such as the unsealing of soils, planting of trees (green infrastructures), the renaturalisation or creation of new water bodies (blue infrastructures) improve local air quality, climate and water regulation<span class=\"s39\">3,4<\/span>. The rule of thumb 3-30-300 is a suitable target: 3 trees per house, 30% tree canopy in the neighbourhood, 300 metres to the nearest green space<span class=\"s39\">5<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p21\"><strong><span class=\"s28\">MustDo <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s30\"><b>3:<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><b>Did<\/b><b> <\/b><b>you<\/b><b> <\/b><b>know<\/b><b> <\/b><b>that<\/b><b> <\/b><b>artificial<\/b><b> <\/b><b>light<\/b><b> <\/b><b>is<\/b><b> <\/b><b>one<\/b><b> <\/b><b>of<\/b><b> <\/b><b>the<\/b><b> <\/b><b>most<\/b><b> <\/b><b>important<\/b><b> <\/b><b>drivers<\/b><b> <\/b><b>of<\/b><b> <\/b><span class=\"s6\"><b>global <\/b><\/span><span class=\"s58\"><b>change,<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s58\"><b>making<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s58\"><b>nights<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s58\"><b>2<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s58\"><b>to<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s58\"><b>6%<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s58\"><b>brighter<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s58\"><b>every<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s58\"><b>year<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s61\"><b>1<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s58\"><b>?<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s6\"><b>We<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s6\"><b>call<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s6\"><b>for<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s6\">the<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">widespread<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">reduction<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">of<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">artificial<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">light<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">around fauna-flora-habitat<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">areas<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">(FFH<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">areas).<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">Artificial<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">light<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">emissions<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">are<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">increasingly<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">impacting<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">protected<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">areas<\/span><span class=\"s63\">2<\/span><span class=\"s6\">.<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">They threaten ecological<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">linkages and interactions among and<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">within biological<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">communities<\/span><span class=\"s63\">3<\/span><span class=\"s6\">.<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">Additionally,<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">these and <\/span>other anthropogenic emissions violate the Habitats Directive. At the same time, protected areas must be <span class=\"s6\">system<\/span>atically planned in a way that includes research findings on the invisible biodiversity of soils, sediments and waters. These communities play an important role in the connectivity and health of ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p26\"><b><span class=\"s28\">MustDo<\/span> <span class=\"s66\">4: <\/span>Did<\/b><b> <\/b><b>you<\/b><b> <\/b><b>know<\/b><b> <\/b><b>that<\/b><b> <\/b><b>roughly<\/b><b> <\/b><b>70%<\/b><b> <\/b><b>of<\/b><b> <\/b><b>the<\/b><b> <\/b><b>7,000<\/b><b> <\/b><b>languages<\/b><b> <\/b><b>known<\/b><b> <\/b><b>to<\/b><b> <\/b><b>date<\/b><b> <\/b><span class=\"s2\"><b>are<\/b><\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>native<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>to<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>just<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>\u00bc<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>of<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>the<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>earth\u2018s<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>surface,<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>and<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>that<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>this<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>\u00bc<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>also<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>corresponds<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>to<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>the<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>regions<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>with<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>the<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>highest<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>bio- diversity<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s35\"><b>1<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s21\"><b>?<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><b>We<\/b><b> <\/b><b>call<\/b><b> <\/b><b>for<\/b><b> <\/b>the preservation, maintenance and documentation of indigenous and local languages and their associated knowledge systems. This includes recognising land, territorial and socio-cultural rights of indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLCs). Biological, socio-cultural and linguistic diversity are inter- twined, having co-evolved as socio-ecological systems<span class=\"s39\">2<\/span>. The highly developed environmental knowledge as well as the practices of IPLCs play a crucial role for a good life within planetary <span class=\"s6\">boundaries<\/span><span class=\"s63\">3,4,5,6<\/span><span class=\"s6\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p26\"><strong><span class=\"s28\">MustDo<\/span> <\/strong><span class=\"s30\"><b>5:<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><b>Did<\/b><b> <\/b><b>you<\/b><b> <\/b><b>know<\/b><b> <\/b><b>that<\/b><b> <\/b><b>forests<\/b><b> <\/b><b>in<\/b><b> <\/b><b>the<\/b><b> <\/b><b>temperate<\/b><b> <\/b><b>and<\/b><b> <\/b><b>cold<\/b><b> <\/b><b>temperate<\/b><b> <\/b><b>(boreal)<\/b><b> <\/b><span class=\"s2\"><b>cli<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s21\"><b>mate<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>zone<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>store<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s72\"><b>2<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s21\"><b>\/<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s73\"><b>3<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>of<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>the<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>absorbed<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>carbon<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>in<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>the<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>long<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>term<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s35\"><b>1<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s21\"><b>?<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><b>We<\/b><b> <\/b><b>call<\/b><b> <\/b><b>for<\/b><b> <\/b>the global protection of primary forests from overexploitation and for the development of degraded forests into natural, climate-resilient forests through targeted planting and natural regeneration. This maintains existing and creates new carbon sinks and strengthens forests\u2019 as well as people\u2019s health<span class=\"s39\">2<\/span>. In spite of increasing demand for wood as a resource, <span class=\"s2\">this <\/span>demand can be met if trade and environmental poli- cy takes the interconnectedness of global wood production into account.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p17\"><b> <\/b><strong><span class=\"s28\">MustDo<\/span><\/strong> <span class=\"s30\"><b>6:<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><b>Did<\/b><b> <\/b><b>you<\/b><b> <\/b><b>know<\/b><b> <\/b><b>that<\/b><b> <\/b><b>agriculture<\/b><b> <\/b><b>is<\/b><b> <\/b><b>currently<\/b><b> <\/b><b>subsidised<\/b><b> <\/b><b>to<\/b><b> <\/b><b>the<\/b><b> <\/b><b>tune<\/b><b> <\/b><b>of<\/b><b> <\/b><b>540<\/b><b> <\/b><span class=\"s6\"><b>billion <\/b><\/span><span class=\"s21\"><b>US<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>dollars<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>globally<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s35\"><b>1<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s21\"><b>?<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><b>We<\/b><b> <\/b><b>demand <\/b>that existing subsidy instruments are used specifically for the transforma- tion of agriculture towards more biodiversity-friendly production. The nature-based use of biodiversity and the variety of ecosystem services for agricultural production reduce the use of mineral fertilisers, <span class=\"s6\">chemical <\/span>pesticides and greenhouse gas emissions and further stabilise yields<span class=\"s39\">2<\/span>. We also call for the expansion of the spectrum of cultivated species<span class=\"s39\">3,4,5<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p26\"><b><span class=\"s52\">MustDo <\/span><span class=\"s53\">7: <\/span>Did<\/b><b> <\/b><b>you<\/b><b> <\/b><b>know<\/b><b> <\/b><b>that<\/b><b> <\/b><b>human<\/b><b> <\/b><b>interventions<\/b><b> <\/b><b>have<\/b><b> <\/b><b>altered,<\/b><b> <\/b><b>sometimes<\/b><b> <\/b><b>severely,<\/b><b> <\/b><b>77%<\/b><span class=\"s82\"><b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> \u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><span class=\"s21\"><b>of<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>the global<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>land area (excluding<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>Antarctica) and 85% of<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>the oceans?<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s21\"><b>This impacts the habitats of 83% of wild mammals and 50% of plants<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s35\"><b>1<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s21\"><b>. <\/b><\/span><b>We demand <\/b>that the protection of natural resources (soil, water, air) and of biodiversity is mainstreamed in all political and planning decision-making processes locally, regionally, nationally and globally. This priority must not be weakened by individual interests. To achieve this, the social costs of ecosystem services and biodiversity loss must be assessed monetarily and then entered into national accounts (e. g. gross national product).
