Between 1961 when his first collection,\u00a0<em>Armed Descent<\/em>, was published by Hawk\u2019s Well Press, and\u00a0<em>Seaspel,<\/em>\u00a0brought out in 2019 by Lunar Chandelier Collective, Kelly has published some 66+ books of poetry as well as 14 volumes of prose, including novels, short stories, &amp; essays.\u00a0<em>A City Full of Voices<\/em>\u00a0is the companion volume to the 2014\u00a0<em>A Voice Full of Cities<\/em>,\u00a0<em>the Collected Essays of Robert Kelly<\/em>, also published by Contra Mundum Press.This book gathers a wide range of commentaries \u2014 from single-phrase response to full-blown essay, personal meditation &amp; various forms of book reviews \u2014 on Kelly\u2019s monumental oeuvre. It covers early reception by a previous generation of poets \u2014 such as Charles Olson and Robert Creeley \u2014 welcoming Kelly among their company, mid-career assessments via an array of compa\u00f1eros &amp; compa\u00f1eras for whom Kelly\u2019s work has been sustenance and inspiration over many decades, and goes all the way to critical investigations by those younger readers &amp; students of the work coming to Robert Kelly\u2019s poetry today. Eminent voices among the contributors include Guy Davenport &amp; Stan Brakhage, Paul Blackburn &amp; Diane Wakoski,<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-column one_half last_column\">\n<p>Jerome Rothenberg &amp; Clayton Eshleman, George Quasha &amp; Charles Stein, P. Adams Sitney &amp; Sharon Mesmer, John Yau &amp; Jennifer Moxley, Jed Rasula &amp; Mary Caponegro, among many others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Robert Kelly\u2019s own voice can also be heard in a series of \u201cThreads\u201d (in which various interview excerpts directly, or indirectly, speak to the sections or \u201cbooks\u201d they precede or follow) that link both in form &amp; content back to the previous volume, and in three landmark interviews with Kelly in full, that also mark three different moments in time: 1963, 1974, &amp; 2007. Both volumes together thus offer the reader not only a \u201ccollected\u201d &amp; \u201ccritical\u201d essays, but also a \u201c<em>Selected Interviews<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It may seem surprising \u2014 &amp; in fact it is \u2014 that an oeuvre of such distinction, complexity, and depth has had to wait until the poet\u2019s 84 year to be f\u00eated with a volume of essays.
