In addition to being an acclaimed author, Abu Saif is also a well-known and outspoken TV commentator. Last year, he became a spokesperson for the Fatah party, which is the ostensible reason behind the brutal attack. Photo credit: Thalia Suzuma.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mezan.org\/en\/post\/23488\">Al Mezan Center for Human Rights reported<\/a> that: \u201cThe assailants took away Abu Saif\u2019s car and mobile phone after they brutally beat the two men. Doctors at Al-Quds Hospital reported that Abu Saif suffered from fractures in his left hand and right legs, deep wounds in the head, and bruises throughout his body. Jadallah suffered from fractures in his right leg and hand and bruises throughout his body. Abu Saif had also been assaulted in a similar incident in September of last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Atef Abu Saif is the author of a half-dozen novels: <em>Shadows of Memory <\/em>(1997);\u00a0<em>The Tale of a<\/em> <em>Ni<\/em><em>ght of Chatter <\/em>(1999);\u00a0<em>Snowball <\/em>(2000);\u00a0<em>The Sour Grapes of Paradise\u00a0<\/em>(2003);\u00a0<em>A Suspended Life<\/em> (2014), and <em>Christina\u00a0<\/em>(2016). These are not the vanity projects of a political commentator: his novel\u00a0<em>A Suspended Life\u00a0<\/em>was shortlisted for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction, and his nuanced short stories are widely acclaimed. He also wrote\u00a0the moving\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2Fcjpbx\">The Drone Eats with Me<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>an intimate nonfiction account of living under bombardment by Israeli forces in the summer of 2014 and was editor of\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2FiQGSn\">The Book of Gaza<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>a collection of short stories published by Comma Press. His own \u201cA Journey in the Opposite Direction\u201d is the book\u2019s most layered, complex, delightful story.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I met Abu Saif in London in 2015, when he was part of the \u201cArab Writer\u2019s Residency Programme\u201d sponsored by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/arablit.org\/2015\/03\/06\/gazan-writer-atef-abu-saif-wins-london-residency\/www.bqfp.com.qa\">Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing<\/a> (BQFP)\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/delfinafoundation.com\/\">Delfina Foundation<\/a>. He made me coffee from Gaza and we spent the afternoon together, mostly in the kitchen of the Delfina residency house, talking about politics and literature.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So why stay in an open-air prison, bombarded from without and attacked from within, if he had other options?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In March of 2018, Abu Saif wrote a short essay for the\u00a0<em>New York Times, \u201c<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/03\/21\/opinion\/gaza-stay-israel-life.html\"><span class=\"balancedHeadline\">Why I Stay in Gaza<\/span><\/a>.\u201d He talks about the possibilities for hope, and the difficulties of being cut off from family and friends. This was shortly after he became a spokesperson for Fatah. In September of last year, he was attacked by unknown assailants.
