Palestinian poet and\u00a0Dareen Tatour<\/a> was surrounded by supporters on Thursday, May 3 as the Nazareth Magistrate\u2019s Court found her\u00a0guilty of incitement to violence and supporting a terror organization. The conviction centered around three social-media posts, including the poem \u201cResist, My People, Resist Them<\/a>\u201c:<\/em><\/p>\n

The thirty-six-year-old poet, who is an Israeli citizen, has been in and out of detention since October 2015, when she was arrested in her home near Nazareth. It was\u00a0in November 2015 that she was charged with \u201cincitement\u201d and supporting terrorism.<\/p>\n

The writer and activist who writes under the name Yoav Haifawi was at the court, and said that in Tatour\u2019s statement following her conviction, she said she\u2019d had no expectation of justice:<\/p>\n

Although Tatour\u2019s case has garnered international support, particularly from writers\u2019 groups, according to Nadim Nashef of Al-Shabaka<\/a>, such arrests have been accelerating: \u201cThe Palestinian Prisoners Club, a non-governmental organization dealing with prisoners\u2019 rights, estimates that more than 150 arrests<\/a> took place between October [2015] and February 2016 based on Facebook posts expressing opinions on the uprising.\u201d<\/p>\n
