{"id":14475,"date":"2016-06-18T00:56:21","date_gmt":"2016-06-18T04:56:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pierrejoris.com\/blog\/?p=14475"},"modified":"2016-06-18T00:56:21","modified_gmt":"2016-06-18T04:56:21","slug":"pen-america-detention-of-poet-dareen-tatour-signals-worrying-escalation-in-israeli-repression","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pierrejoris.com\/blog\/pen-america-detention-of-poet-dareen-tatour-signals-worrying-escalation-in-israeli-repression\/","title":{"rendered":"PEN America: \u2018Detention of Poet Dareen Tatour Signals Worrying Escalation in Israeli Repression\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"posttitle\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"byline\">via Arab Literature (in English) &amp; by\u00a0<span class=\"author vcard\"><a class=\"url fn n\" title=\"View all posts by mlynxqualey\" href=\"https:\/\/arablit.org\/author\/mlynxqualey\/\" rel=\"author\">MLYNXQUALEY<\/a><\/span><\/span> <em>on<\/em> <a title=\"5:11 am\" href=\"https:\/\/arablit.org\/2016\/06\/18\/pen-america-detention-of-poet-dareen-tatour-signals-worrying-escalation-in-israeli-repression\/\" rel=\"bookmark\"><time class=\"entry-date\" datetime=\"2016-06-18T05:11:43+00:00\">JUNE 18, 2016<\/time><\/a> \u2022 <span class=\"commentcount\">( <a class=\"comments_link\" href=\"https:\/\/arablit.org\/2016\/06\/18\/pen-america-detention-of-poet-dareen-tatour-signals-worrying-escalation-in-israeli-repression\/#respond\">0<\/a> )<\/span><\/p>\n<section class=\"entry\"><em>PEN America <a href=\"https:\/\/pen.org\/press-release\/2016\/06\/17\/detention-poet-dareen-tatour-signals-worrying-escalation-israeli\">released a statement<\/a> about <a href=\"https:\/\/arablit.org\/2016\/04\/18\/palestinian-poet-dareen-tatour-jailed-prosecuted-for-poem-on-facebook\/\">the case of Palestinian poet Dareen Tatour<\/a> yesterday, condemning the \u201cfurther evidence of the increasingly aggressive measures undertaken by the [Israeli] government to restrict speech critical of the state\u201d:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-23660 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/arablit.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/06\/tatour.png?w=383&amp;h=165\" alt=\"tatour\" width=\"499\" height=\"215\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 499px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 499\/215;\" \/>Tatour is one of a number of Palestinians who\u2019ve been arrested for online\u00a0speech critical of Israel.\u00a0According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/nadim-nashif\/israel-palestine-social-media_b_9699816.html\">Nadim Nashef of Al-Shabaka<\/a>, \u201cThe Palestinian Prisoners Club, a non-governmental organization dealing with prisoners\u2019 rights, estimates that more than\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.arab48.com\/%D9%81%D9%84%D8%B3%D8%B7%D9%8A%D9%86%D9%8A%D8%A7%D8%AA\/%D8%A3%D8%AE%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%B1\/2016\/03\/12\/%D8%A7%D8%B9%D8%AA%D9%82%D8%A7%D9%84-150-%D9%81%D9%84%D8%B3%D8%B7%D9%8A%D9%86%D9%8A%D8%A7-%D9%85%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%B3%D9%88%D8%A7-%D8%AD%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AA%D8%B9%D8%A8%D9%8A%D8%B1-%D8%B9%D9%84%D9%89-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%81%D9%8A%D8%B3%D8%A8%D9%88%D9%83\" target=\"_hplink\">150 arrests<\/a> took place between October and February 2016 based on Facebook posts expressing opinions on the uprising.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As the PEN release notes,\u00a0Tatour was arrested on October 11\u00a0of last year, \u201cwhen police entered her house in a town outside of Nazareth around 4 am without a search or arrest warrant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She was indited for incitement, like many of the other cases against online speech, and also under the law that prohibits \u201c\u201dSupport for a Terrorist Organization.\u201d She spent three months in Israeli prisons before being placed under house arrest, one of the conditions of which was being prevented from using the internet. According to PEN, \u201cShe will remain under house arrest for the duration of her trial, which is scheduled to resume on July 17 and September 6.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tatour\u2019s case is unusual amont the other anti-speech arrests in that hers centers largely around her poem\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/arablit.org\/2016\/04\/27\/the-poem-for-which-dareen-tatours-under-house-arrest-resist-my-people-resist-them\/\">Resist, My People, Resist Them<\/a>,\u201d translated for ArabLit by Tariq Haydar. Other anti-poetic evidence included the prosecution citing \u201cTatour\u2019s participation in a <a href=\"http:\/\/stanfordpress.typepad.com\/blog\/2015\/10\/remembering-kafr-qasim-.html\" target=\"_blank\">Kafr Qasim<\/a> massacre memorial event and her poetry reading at a Woman\u2019s Day event in Nazareth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Karin Deutsch Karlekar, director of Free Expression Programs at PEN America:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Interpreting an artistic work as a direct call to terrorism dangerously misconstrues an act of free expression by an Arab*\u00a0citizen of Israel as a serious security threat punishable by preventative detention and prosecution.\u00a0The connection between Tatour\u2019s activities and the charges of incitement to violence and support for terrorism relies solely on suggestion in the form of a poem and video rather than actual evidence.
