And a long time a-coming. But finally <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spdbooks.org\/Producte\/9781930068407\/theogony.aspx\">here it is<\/a>: as close as possible to a Douglas Rothschild \u201cCollected.\u201d The pleasure of <strong>Theogony<\/strong> starts in the hand: the square format, perfectly suited to the work, and the pleasant, solid, yet casual heft of its 210 pages. The pleasure goes on in the eye: the cover photograph by Drew Gardner (see above, though that elongated repro doesn\u2019t really do justice to the actual object) playing wistfully with inside & outside, the curtains rhyming with a specific absence that dwarfs or dwarfed the two high rise buildings & their pomo toppings. Sun, yet so much shadow. Light but subdued \u2014 is it dawn or dusk?\u00a0 \u2014\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2014\u2014\u2014 so rudely interrupted<br \/>\nas I have to run to catch<br \/>\nthe N train at 36th<br \/>\nto try to make St. Marks<br \/>\nI am late the train is<br \/>\nlate too I am irritated the<br \/>\ntrain is too & apologizes<br \/>\nfor being slow so I pull<br \/>\n<strong>Theogony<\/strong> out & start to read<br \/>\nwith notebook at the<br \/>\nready now the young Asian<br \/>\ngirl next to me takes<br \/>\nher earphones out to listen to<br \/>\nthe train\u2019s apologies &<br \/>\nher eyes fall on the<br \/>\nopen <strong>Theogony<\/strong> & I notice<br \/>\nfrom the corner of mine<br \/>\nthat she keeps reading<br \/>\n& all of a sudden she<br \/>\nsmiles & starts to giggle before<br \/>\nputting her hand over<br \/>\nher mouth & turning away<br \/>\nstill smiling & chuckling<br \/>\n& that\u2019s the best review<br \/>\nI could never write of<br \/>\nDug\u2019s book, just then the<br \/>\ntrain stops at 14th street I<br \/>\nget off walk fast in fading<br \/>\nsun & nearly make it on<br \/>\ntime to the Jack Spicer table<br \/>\nronde no longer worried, in<br \/>\nfact happy, thinking how<br \/>\ngreat that just now as I move<br \/>\nback to NYC for the<br \/>\nfirst time since 1972<br \/>\nhow great that there is a poet<br \/>\nhere as sharp on the city<br \/>\n& as good on us as<br \/>\nmy friend Paul Blackburn<br \/>\nwas back then and now I\u2019m<br \/>\nhere at the Poetry Project<br \/>\n& of course Douglas is<br \/>\nhere too listening to<br \/>\nwhat the West Coast people<br \/>\nhave to say in NYC so I<br \/>\nclose the notebook &<br \/>\nadmire my man\u2019s<br \/>\nsuspenders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1381\" href=\"https:\/\/pierrejoris.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=1381\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1381 lazyload\" title=\"theogonyback\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pierrejoris.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/theogonyback-249x300.jpg\" alt=\"theogonyback\" width=\"249\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 249px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 249\/300;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My favorite book of poems for 2009 so far.
