Below\u00a0a poem from the sixties\u00a0\u2014 p. 133 in his indispensable <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Intent-On-Collected-1962-2006\/dp\/1556438338\">The Intent On (Collected Poems 1962-2006)<\/a><\/em>, North Atlantic Books 2009 \u2014\u00a0one of the poems I came across early on in\u00a0his book <em>Relation<\/em>,\u00a0and that introduced me to a part of this land I knew nothing about, and which I learned \u2014 via\u00a0Robert Duncan \u2014 to call <strong>Irbyland<\/strong>. For more on his work, check out the Irby homage on Jacket2, <a href=\"https:\/\/jacket2.org\/feature\/kenneth-irby\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Three Geographical Variations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"padding-left: 270px;\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>for Ed Dorn<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">North out of Lawrence we turned<br \/>\neast before we had to a back<br \/>\ntrack to Valley Falls and Ozawkie back<br \/>\nroads north into Hiawatha<br \/>\nOld trips of the past will not save us<br \/>\nNoon meals in or out of a calendar<br \/>\npicture quiet and readdress the east<br \/>\nturn into White Cloud and Iowa Point<br \/>\nto reach toward the river and where<br \/>\nthe river&#8217;s urge in us eased us a little<br \/>\nThat is the flow the urge toward<br \/>\neach other links hand in hand as<br \/>\nword in word driving drinking beer all Sunday afternoon<br \/>\nI have come west and at the far ocean remember<br \/>\nIt does not matter loose specifics of whose<br \/>\nthe linkage matters the flow<br \/>\nthe closeness possible the intimations of divinity<br \/>\nas intimations of the dreamed spread land<br \/>\nspread before the eyes of those White Clouds diddled sooners<br \/>\neven the willful wily promoters<br \/>\nlooking west at the land&#8217;s run<br \/>\nout from under them<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">*<\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\">I will not let blood and I do not know<br \/>\nif there is any turning back upon the land<br \/>\nto traverse, how much<br \/>\ntraversing now will reopen<br \/>\nwhat spaces seem nowhere<br \/>\nease us together\u2014it is not different to go past<br \/>\nthe endless misuse of landscape<br \/>\nhere in Berkeley or there in New Mexico, what space<br \/>\nis open beyond is open across the whole world<br \/>\nLooks past whatever salvations of individuals<br \/>\nrealizing salvation is only to pass<br \/>\ninto the space all people live in<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">*<\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\">There is no need to substitute any world for this one<br \/>\nin order to come into any wonder or more<br \/>\nenter the open imagination.
