A good obit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2015\/apr\/13\/gunter-grass-german-nobel-laureate-dies-aged-87\">here<\/a>, an excellent article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2015\/apr\/13\/gunter-grass\">here<\/a>\u00a0&amp; his last interview <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2015\/apr\/14\/gunter-grass-final-interview-authors-fears-of-another-world-war\">here<\/a> in the Guardian. Salman Rushdie tweeted: &#8220;This is very sad. A true giant, inspiration, and friend. Drum for him, little Oskar.&#8221; (See also Rushdie&#8217;s piece in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/the-greatness-of-gunter-grass?mbid=social_twitter\">The New Yorker<\/a>). I will reread some of the work, and watch Schl\u00f6ndorf&#8217;s \u00a0film version of &#8220;The Tin Drum.&#8221; Here some of his poems translated by Jerome Rothenberg, from the latter&#8217;s <em>New Young German Poets<\/em> (City Lights, 1959):<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>MUSIC<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>OUT OF DOORS<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">When the silence seemed to have been subdued,<br \/>\n<\/span>Aurelius came with the bone.<br \/>\nSee my flute and my white shirt,<br \/>\nsee the giraffe peering over the fence,<br \/>\nthat&#8217;s my kin that&#8217;s listening.<br \/>\nNow I&#8217;m going to beat down all those thrushes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">When the yellow dog ran over the meadow<br \/>\nthe concert died out.<br \/>\nNobody ever found the bone after that.<br \/>\nThe notes were laid out under the chairs,<br \/>\nthe concertmaster raised his air-rifle<br \/>\nand shot down all the blackbirds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>THE<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>OPEN WARDROBE<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p9\"><span class=\"s1\">The shoes are on the bottom.<br \/>\n<\/span>They stand in terror of a beetle<br \/>\nOn title way out,<br \/>\nOf a penny on the way back in,<br \/>\nOf a beetle and a penny on which they can step<br \/>\nTill it makes an impression.<br \/>\nOn top is the Kingdom of Headwear.<br \/>\nHead where it&#8217;s safe. Head nowhere.<br \/>\nImpossible feathers,<br \/>\nTell me the bird&#8217;s name,<br \/>\nWhere did his eyes roll<br \/>\nWhen he found himself trapped in so much color?<br \/>\nThe tiny white balls, asleep in the pockets,<br \/>\nAre dreaming of moths.<br \/>\nHere a button was lost,<br \/>\nThe snake in the girdle grew tired.<br \/>\nSorrowful silk,<br \/>\nAsters and other highly combustible flowers,<br \/>\nAutumn transformed to a dress.<br \/>\nEvery Sunday stuffed full of meat and the<br \/>\nSalt of ruffled panties.<br \/>\nBefore the wardrobe grows still, turns wooden,<br \/>\nA distant kin of the pine tree \u2014<br \/>\nWho&#8217;s going to wear your topcoat<br \/>\nSomeday when you&#8217;re dead?<br \/>\nMoving an arm through your sleeve.<br \/>\nAnd every movement so friendly?<br \/>\nWho will turn up your collar on top,<br \/>\nWill continue to stand in front of the pictures,<br \/>\nAnd be alone under the windy bell?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p11\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>NANA THE<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>DOLL: SKETCHES FROM HER DAILY LIFE<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p12\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>The Clock<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s1\">The doll is playing with the minutes,<br \/>\nbut no one&#8217;s playing with the doll \u2014<br \/>\nunless the clock should take three steps<br \/>\nand then say, Nana, Nana, Nana, Nana &#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p13\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>The Hairdresser<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p14\"><span class=\"s1\">The doll is playing with the rain,<br \/>\nshe braids it, she covers her ears with its locks,<br \/>\nthen she pulls out a comb from a miniature box,<br \/>\nand combs the rain with the comb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p12\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>A Full Moon in March<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p14\"><span class=\"s1\">The doll wakes up, the children are asleep,<br \/>\nthe moon&#8217;s entangled in the curtains,<br \/>\nthe doll helps out by shaking the curtains,<br \/>\nthe moon plays possum and the doll wakes up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>A Humid Day<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p16\"><span class=\"s1\">The doll got a yardstick sent as a gift,<br \/>\nit was yellow so she played Hurricane.<br \/>\nWhen it bent she got lightning without any hitch,<br \/>\nbut making it thunder was really a bitch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Hydrophobi<\/i>a<\/p>\n<p class=\"p9\"><span class=\"s1\">The doll discovered a hollow tooth,<br \/>\n<\/span>she dropped it into a glass.<br \/>\nThe glass blew up, but the tooth was safe,<br \/>\nso it bit the leg of a chair in half.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p17\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Destiny<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p9\"><span class=\"s1\">The doll is playing with a spider,<br \/>\n<\/span>the spider has a yo yo.<br \/>\nThe doll is yanking the line, this could give us all a rough time,<br \/>\nso much depends on a line.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p13\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Spring<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p18\"><span class=\"s1\">The doll is happy, celluloid!<br \/>\nthe roof drops water on her head<br \/>\nand makes a hole \u2014<br \/>\nthe doll is happy, celluloid!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p17\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Autumn<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p18\"><span class=\"s1\">The doll is playing with the market,<br \/>\ncurrencies and poplars quiver.<br \/>\nThe leaves drop down like colored bonds,<br \/>\nthe deutschmark&#8217;s up the river.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>At the Zoo<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">The doll rode up to the zoo<br \/>\n<\/span>and stared an owl in the eye.<br \/>\nSince then the doll&#8217;s had mice on the brain,<br \/>\nif it only was pre-owlic times again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p12\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>The Longest Song<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p20\"><span class=\"s1\">The doll is singing the carpet.<br \/>\nBut because the carpet has so many stanzas<br \/>\nthe doll will soon be hotter than that \u2014<br \/>\nwho knows the last line of the carpet?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p21\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Careful Love<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p22\"><span class=\"s1\">The doll sat under the grownups&#8217; bed and dug every sound.<br \/>\nWhen she decided to try it out with the rocking horse<br \/>\nshe kept on repeating, during the breaks:<br \/>\nBe careful what you&#8217;re doing, man, be careful what you&#8217;re doing!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p23\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Lousy Marksman<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p24\"><span class=\"s1\">The doll was nailed on a piece of wood<br \/>\n<\/span>and bombarded with darts \u2014<br \/>\nbut none of them hit her<br \/>\nbecause she blinked.<\/p>\n<p><i>The Torso<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p9\"><span class=\"s1\">The doll wound up without any arms,<br \/>\nand after her legs had migrated too,<br \/>\n<\/span>she thought for a long time whether to stay in this country \u2014<br \/>\nwhen she stayed, well, she said, what could be better than Europe?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p26\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Maturation<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p9\"><span class=\"s1\">The doll grew so tall she could look over the dresser.<br \/>\n<\/span>Each time the ball bounced she just couldn&#8217;t help feeling gay<br \/>\nwhere she was. The children down below refused to believe it:<br \/>\nthey never would have dreamed their doll would act that way!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p28\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Doll&#8217;s Last Sermon<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p9\"><span class=\"s1\">Now that the doll has spoken out, the weary slotmachines<br \/>\n<\/span>grow dumb, they stop rattling peppermints,<br \/>\nthe houses crumble to their knees<br \/>\nand turn devout \u2014 and all because the doll has spoken out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p28\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Afternoon<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p31\"><span class=\"s1\">The doll fell into the tea,<br \/>\ndissolved like sugar in that tea \u2014<br \/>\nand whoever drank her got all dolled up<br \/>\ntill everyone looked like everyone&#8217;s doll.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>In Memoriam<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p32\"><span class=\"s1\">This doll will cost you a dollar ten \u2014<br \/>\nat that price she doesn&#8217;t look bad at all.<br \/>\nBut if you want prettier dollies,<br \/>\nthen you&#8217;ll have to pay more than a dollar ten.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p36\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>GASCO,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>or<br \/>\nTHE<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>TOAD<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p9\"><span class=\"s1\">In back of our town<br \/>\nthere&#8217;s a toad who squats on<br \/>\n<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the gasworks<br \/>\n<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">when he breathes in and out<br \/>\n<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0we can cook<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Though best known as a novelist, artist &amp; polemicist, Grass was also a poet.
