On Monday, the Syrian poet Adonis was chosen to win the\u00a0Kumaran Asan World Prize for Poetry, given\u00a0in memory of the legendary Malayalam poet:<\/em><\/p>\n

This honor \u2014 the lastest for the much-laureled Paris-based\u00a0poet \u2014 came just after Adonis\u00a0opened \u201cA,\u201d a\u00a0Paris\u00a0exhibition of his visual art.<\/p>\n

According to The Times of India\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0The Hindu, <\/em>jury member K Jayakuma said at a news conference announcing the Kumara Asan award:\u00a0\u201cWe didn\u2019t have to think twice to choose Adonis as he is the most prominent voice in world poetry today.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThough separated by more than a century, Kumaran Asan and Adonis have a lot in common as poets. Both are great modernizers in their language, Kumaran Asan in Malayalam and Adonis in Arabic, and share a spontaneous urge for freedom and social reformation without compromising traditional values.\u201d<\/p>\n

The poet, born\u00a0Ali Ahmad Saidi Esber in 1930, spoke with\u00a0Olivia Snaije <\/a>the night before his art show opened and a week before he won the Kumaran Asan prize. Adonis calls his visual work \u201craqima,\u201d Snaije says, \u201cfrom \u2018raqama,\u2019 which he says means to write and color simultaneously.\u201d<\/p>\n

Calligraphy, Adonis told Snaije, is tiring, \u201clike everything that is beautiful is tiring. It\u2019s not easy. Taking the easy way out is the great illness of art as well as of our modern life.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to a profile this week in the\u00a0<\/a>New York Times<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>Adonis took to making visual art \u201cwhen he was having trouble writing poetry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adonis is certainly not the only prominent writer from the Levant to marry the worlds of visual art and poetry \u2014 Etel Adnan\u2019s visual art has seen a surge in interest<\/a> \u2014 but his are very poetry-oriented, usually incorporating verse.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Kumaran Asan prize doesn\u2019t bring an enormous purse \u2014 300,000 rupees (around $4,800) \u2014 but it is prestigious, and is set to\u00a0be presented to Adonis\u00a0on May 3 at a function at Kayikkara.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
