Two days ago, this\u00a0Romanian review<\/a>\u00a0(extract below) of my & Charlotte Mandell (under the name Ann Reid)’s 2003 translation of Abdelwahab Meddeb’s The Malady of Islam, <\/em>published on 2\/10\/15,\u00a0came to my attention. Yesterday I had\u00a0news from the American publisher of the book \u2014 which has been out of print for some years now \u2014 that they are not interested in bringing out\u00a0a paperback edition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This book & its author \u2014 my friend Abdelwahab Meddeb, who passed\u00a0away last November (here<\/a>) \u2014 have been much on my mind these last weeks & months. Whenever reflecting on events \u2014 from the Paris Charlie Hebdo<\/em> assassinations to the Chapel Hill executions, from the Nigerian Boko Haram rampages to the exactions of ISIL \u2014 I always come to a point where I wonder how\u00a0Abdelwahab\u00a0would have thought about them. I very much miss his presence, his intellectual rigor, his vast knowledge of the various Islamic cultures through history.<\/p>\n

It seems to me therefore important that his work on this subject be available to\u00a0the English-language reader & I have thus decided, in agreement with my co-translator, to serialize The Malady of Islam<\/em>\u00a0over the next\u00a0few weeks on Nomadics, <\/em>starting Monday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Pe Abdelwahab Meddeb obi\u0219nuiam s\u0103-l ascult la France Culture, p\u00e2n\u0103 la moartea lui, survenit\u0103 \u00een noiembrie 2014. De la microfonul emisiunii \u201eCulture d\u2019Islam\u201d<\/a> tuna \u0219i fulgera (cu mult\u0103 erudi\u021bie, dar \u0219i cu elegan\u021b\u0103) \u00eempotriva islamului fundamentalist, ai c\u0103rui promotori, ne spunea vorbitorul, caut\u0103 s\u0103 trag\u0103 pe linie moart\u0103, ori chiar s\u0103 anihileze \u00een mod violent, mo\u0219tenirea cultural\u0103 a islamului din alte epoci.<\/p>\n

A durat o vreme p\u00e2n\u0103 c\u00e2nd am realizat c\u0103 Meddeb, excelent cunosc\u0103tor al literaturii arabe \u0219i al celei franceze, scrisese el \u00eensu\u0219i un raft de c\u0103r\u021bi despre islam. Dat\u0103 fiind u\u0219urin\u021ba cu care se mi\u0219ca pe un teritoriu imens (filozofie, istorie, istoria artei, civiliza\u021bie \u0219i limb\u0103 arab\u0103), ar fi trebuit s\u0103 presupun de la bun \u00eenceput c\u0103 ocupa un post la o universitate din Fran\u021ba.<\/p>\n

Una dintre numeroasele lui c\u0103r\u021bi, La Maladie de l\u2019Islam <\/em>(2002), reprezint\u0103 o interoga\u021bie lucid\u0103 asupra islamului politic, animat de ambi\u021bii politice enorme \u0219i otr\u0103vit de uria\u0219e resentimente fa\u021b\u0103 de Occident. Am frunz\u0103rit de cur\u00e2nd, \u00een fug\u0103, versiunea \u00een englez\u0103 a c\u0103r\u021bii, pe care o socotesc o lectur\u0103 important\u0103 pentru oricine dore\u0219te s\u0103 \u00een\u021beleag\u0103 geneza islamului fundamentalist a c\u0103rui spectru b\u00e2ntuie ast\u0103zi o bun\u0103 parte a lumii musulmane.<\/p>\n

\u021ainta predilect\u0103 a criticilor lui Meddeb este wahhabismul, ideologie islamic\u0103 fondat\u0103 de Mohamed Ibn \u2019Abd Al-Wahhab (1703-1792), a c\u0103rui cea mai cunoscut\u0103 carte este Kitab at-Tawhid<\/em> (\u201eCartea unicit\u0103\u021bii lui Dumnezeu\u201d). \u00cen adoptarea de c\u0103tre tribul Saud a ideologiei elaborate de Al-Wahhab, autorul c\u0103r\u021bii vede sursa evolu\u021biei Arabiei Saudite din urm\u0103toarele dou\u0103 secole. Interesant este c\u0103 aceast\u0103 evolu\u021bie n-a sc\u0103pat aten\u021biei unui personaj eminamente postreligios, marchizul de Sade, care \u00een plin\u0103 epoc\u0103 iluminist\u0103 nota c\u0103 \u00een Arabia a ap\u0103rut un lider religios care \u00eencearc\u0103 purificarea religiei lui Mahomet.<\/p>\n
