The jury\u2019s verdict for the prestigious literary award, considered the Nobel Prize of literature in Spanish, was read at noon on Monday by Spain\u2019s Minister for Culture, Jos\u00e9 Ignacio Wert. \u00a0He highlighted the author\u2019s \u201cability to delve into language, his \u201ccomplex stylistic proposals\u201d and \u201chis desire to bring together\u201d different cultures. Goytisolo, who now lives in Marrakech (Morocco), will receive the award at a ceremony to be held on April 23 in Alcal\u00e1 de Henares, in Madrid\u2019s region. The Cervantes Prize is awarded by the Spanish Minister of Culture and is worth \u20ac125,000. Goytisolo\u2019s works have been translated into many languages, including English, French, German, Polish, Slovak and Romanian. His two brothers Jos\u00e9 Agust\u00edn and Lu\u00eds are also writers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"pos-content\">\n<div class=\"element element-textarea element-textareapro first\">\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Juan Goytisolo, who was born in Barcelona in 1931, travelled extensively, living in several countries and his current abode is Marrakesh. In 1956 he moved to Paris, where he worked as a consultant for the French publisher Gallimard. Thirteen years later, in the late 1960\u2019s, he moved to the United States, where he worked as a professor, primarily in the University of La Jolla in San Diego, and later in Boston and New York.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>An expert in the Arab world who also cooperates with UNESCO<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Barcelona-born author is a member of the International Parliament of Writers and is president of the jury that selects the UNESCO Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. An expert of the Arab world, Goytisolo\u2019s has contributed knowledge on this subject at European level through articles and essays. Moreover, he was a vociferous advocate of the designation of the Jemaa-el-Fna square in Marrakesh, as an Oral Heritage of Humanity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His first novels were \u2018Juegos de manos\u2019 (1954), \u2018Duelo en el para\u00edso\u2019 (1955) or the trilogy made up of \u2018El circo\u2019 (1947), \u2018Fiestas\u2019 (1958) and \u2018La resaca\u2019- which are considered to be part of the \u2018critic realism\u2019 literary movement. Through his trilogy formed of \u2018Se\u00f1as de identidad\u2019, \u2018Reivindicaci\u00f3n del conde Don Juli\u00e1n\u2019 and \u2018Juan sin tierra\u2019, there was a breaking point in Spanish literary tradition until now, as highlighted by the Spanish Ministry of Culture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From this point on, he has explored new styles, and published novels such as \u2018Makbara\u2019, \u2018Paisajes despu\u00e9s de la batalla\u2019, \u2018Las virtudes del p\u00e1jaro solitario\u2019, \u2018La cuarentena\u2019, \u2018La saga de los Marx\u2019, \u2018El sitio de los sitios\u2019, \u2018Carajicomedia\u2019 or \u2018Tel\u00f3n de boca\u2019. In the 1980s, he published two autobiographical works: \u2018Coto vedado\u2019 and \u2018En los reinos de taifa\u2019. In addition, he also wrote \u2018El furg\u00f3n de cola\u2019, \u2018Blanco White\u2019, \u2018Contracorrientes\u2019, \u2018Cronicas sarracinas\u2019 and \u2018Aproximaciones a Gaud\u00ed en Capadocia\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As for his journalistic contributions, they are to be found in the collections \u2018P\u00e1jaro que ensucia su propio nido\u2019 and \u2018Contra las sagrades formas\u2019. What is more, between 1993 and 1996, he lived in close proximity to the conflicts in Bosnia and Chechnya, and published several articles in the Spanish newspaper \u2018El Pa\u00eds\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Until now, he has received other awards such as the Octavio Paz Essay and Poetry Award (2002), the Juan Rulfo Award (2004), the National Prize of Spanish Literature (2008), Award of Arts and Cultures of the Three Cultures Foundation (2009), and the Quixote Prize for Spanish Literature for the work of his entire career (2010).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The great Juan Goytisolo, for me the most interesting Spanish writer of his generation, was awarded the prestigious Cervantes Prize for 2014.
