A day, thus, on which to take time to reread a few of Paz&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/ndbooks.com\/book\/the-poems-of-octavio-paz\">poems<\/a> in Eliot Weinberger&#8217;s excellent translations, &amp; probably an essay or so. On the day of his passing I was in Berkeley &amp; wrote the following poem, in memoriam:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>6:30 am on terrace of the <\/i>French Hotel <i>in<br \/>\n<\/i><i>Berkeley, reading the New York Times<br \/>\n<\/i><i>obituary for Octavio Paz while<\/i><\/p>\n<p>across the street just<br \/>\nto the right of Chez Panisse<br \/>\na pale watery sun<\/p>\n<p>sits locked in-<br \/>\nto the criss-cross webbing<br \/>\nof a tall dark fir \u2014<\/p>\n<p>as if his going had<br \/>\nfor a moment stopped<br \/>\nSol in it\u2019s tracks \u2014<\/p>\n<p>the world a bit colder<br \/>\nafter the heat of Paz,<br \/>\na bit older, less bold,<\/p>\n<p>his ashes raining<br \/>\nnow over<span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\"><br \/>\n<\/span>Mexican earth.<\/p>\n<p>A light wind shifts<br \/>\ntwigs, the sun it<br \/>\nseems to<\/p>\n<p>move in-<br \/>\ncrementally higher \u2014<br \/>\nit all does go on<\/p>\n<p>while you now sit with Benito<br \/>\nJuarez &amp; Pancho Villa<br \/>\n&amp; introduce them<\/p>\n<p>to some yankee poetas<br \/>\nBlackburn, say, and Olson still<br \/>\nmumbling \u201cthe wheels of the sun<\/p>\n<p>must be unstuck\u201d<br \/>\n&amp; you argue for a<br \/>\nrevolution<\/p>\n<p>of the imagination &amp;<br \/>\nwe say, Octavio,<br \/>\ngracias for<\/p>\n<p>releasing that sun!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; &#8230; on March 31, &amp; left eso mundo in April 1998.
