Below a second poem I translated \u2014 &amp; if you are in the DC area you can hear Michael read these &amp; other poems, tomorrow, Wednesday:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"background-color: #99cc00;\"><b>Georgetown University<br \/>\n<\/b><b>Department of German<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"background-color: #99cc00;\">You are cordially invited to a<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600; background-color: #99cc00;\"><i>Poetry Reading<\/i><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"background-color: #99cc00;\">with <strong>Michael Speier<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"background-color: #99cc00;\">when:\u00a0Wednesday, March 26, 5:00-6:30 pm,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"background-color: #99cc00;\">where: ICC 450<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">from: <strong>HAUPT \/ STADT \/ STUDIO<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">3.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>THEY BARELY throw shadows, black angels<br \/>\npassing by the window (addresses, private numbers)<br \/>\nthey come down with a landing impact noise<br \/>\nparachutes that don\u2019t parade \u2014 one gets coffee<br \/>\none checks her make-up pulls up her slip<br \/>\none speaks little into his cellphone one dictates<br \/>\none ogles the pretty secretary one<br \/>\nmakes dumb jokes replaces batteries<br \/>\ngoes home from the cleaning \u2014 fire<br \/>\nfrom fire split into two, their wash<br \/>\nwhat they wore, now in the museum( wash<br \/>\nwashed, now in the museum)<\/p>\n<p>become homey the absent <i>heimisch<\/i>, on<br \/>\nsplit open floors, girder unbearable, what<br \/>\ngrew down to dust, unlike frenetic<br \/>\nstone waves sink down these<br \/>\nboxes, hover, blow kisses<br \/>\nof cloud-flour, add to it the rattle of<br \/>\nthe closing &amp; closing again doors<br \/>\nof the empty elevators (of the empty airs)<\/p>\n<p>of people who go for walks in invisible<br \/>\nbuildings, a tree-&amp;-lawn-lobby, as if they<br \/>\nwere on vacation from themselves, from a life, at<br \/>\nimage\u2019s edge the water, the grief- &amp; water-hole, [memorial-basin<br \/>\nwhere the souls, always again pumped up, scoured out<br \/>\nby the new<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Prof. Michael Speier<\/b> is a Berlin-based poet, translator, and literary scholar and the German Department\u2019s Max Kade writer-in-residence this semester. In addition to having published a number of anthologies and translated modern English, French, and Italian poetry, he is the founding editor of the Paul-Celan-Jahrbuch (since 1987) and the literary magazine Park (since 1976).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His primary scholarly interests include symbolism, expressionistic prose, translation theory and practice, the image of the city in literature, and modern poetry, especially Paul Celan. His teaching interests also include creative writing. The author of numerous articles and reviews, he has written or edited the following books: Die \u00c4sthetik Jean Pauls in der Dichtung des deutschen Symbolismus (1979), Kehr um im Bild (with Dieter Straub, 1983); Im \u00dcbersetzen leben (with Klaus Berger, 1986); Berlin!Berlin! Eine Gro\u00dfstadt im Gedicht (1987); Poesie der Metropole (1990); Berlin mit deinen frechen Feuern (1998); Interpretationen\u2014Gedichte von Paul Celan (2002), Berlin, du bist die Stadt (2011).<\/p>\n<p>His own poetry has appeared in nine volumes and over 40 anthologies and has been translated into twelve languages. In 2007 he received the Schiller Award.
