{"id":11667,"date":"2014-02-25T11:07:06","date_gmt":"2014-02-25T15:07:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pierrejoris.com\/blog\/?p=11667"},"modified":"2014-02-25T11:07:06","modified_gmt":"2014-02-25T15:07:06","slug":"the-eternal-refugee-by-iyad-hayatleh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pierrejoris.com\/blog\/the-eternal-refugee-by-iyad-hayatleh\/","title":{"rendered":"The Eternal Refugee by Iyad Hayatleh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Via <a href=\"http:\/\/electronicintifada.net\/blog\/arts-and-culture\">Electronic Intifada<\/a>, posted by Sarah Irving\u00a0on Mon, 02\/24\/2014 &#8211; 23:00 :<br \/>\n<iframe data-src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dnSPGl4Yie0\" height=\"270\" width=\"480\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Iyad Hayatleh, a Palestinian born and raised in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/electronicintifada.net\/tags\/syria\">Syria<\/a>, has posted footage of his moving one-man performance\u00a0<em>The Eternal Refugee<\/em>, recorded at the Tron Theatre in Glasgow,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/electronicintifada.net\/tags\/scotland\">Scotland<\/a>\u00a0in October 2013.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>The show reflects on life in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/electronicintifada.net\/tags\/yarmouk\">Yarmouk refugee camp<\/a>, where, according to Hayatleh, \u201cthe scent of Galilean thyme mingled with Damascus jasmine\u201d and Palestinians and Syrians lived side-by-side.<\/p>\n<p>But, as he narrates with the help of video and brief theatrical sketches, the refugee condition has colored his entire life and, as a Palestinian, he was \u201cforced to leave his home twelve years\u201d before he was born and then to flee yet again after repression from the Syrian regime.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Hayatleh shows, his family and friends face another\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/electronicintifada.net\/tags\/nakba\">Nakba<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 a catrastrophe \u2014 as Palestinians are caught up in the Syrian civil war.
