The events will include a panel discussion on Joris\u2019 works at 2:00 p.m.; a conversation with Joris at 4:15 p.m.; and a reading by Joris at 8:00 p.m. The events are cosponsored by the New York State Writers Institute and UAlbany\u2019s English Department, with additional support from University Auxiliary Services, the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures,\u00a0<i>Fence,<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Barzakh.<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>PROFILE<br \/>\n\u201cA Celebration of Poet and Translator Pierre Joris\u201d<\/b>\u00a0will feature three events on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 in the Standish Room, Science Library on the UAlbany uptown campus.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Events will include a 2:00 p.m. panel discussion on the works of Pierre Joris, moderated by New York State Writers Institute Director Donald Faulkner, with poets and scholars Robert Kelly, Peter Cockelbergh, Belle Gironda, and Don Byrd; a 4:15 p.m. conversation with Joris, moderated by UAlbany English professor Tom\u00e1s Urayo\u00e1n Noel; and an 8:00 p.m. reading by Pierre Joris.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A professor at the University at Albany from 1992 to 2013, and one of the foremost translators of avant-garde poetry into both French and English, Pierre Joris has moved between the U.S., Europe, and North Africa for 45 years, publishing close to 50 books of poetry, essays, and translations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Joris\u2019s recent publications include the poetry volume,\u00a0<i>Meditations on the Stations of Mansur al-Hallaj<\/i>\u00a0(2013), and\u00a0<i>The University of California Book of North African Literature\u00a0<\/i>(2013, volume 4 in the\u00a0<i>Poems for the Millennium<\/i>\u00a0series), coedited with Habib Tengour. In reviewing this volume,\u00a0<i>Artforum<\/i>\u00a0said, \u201cWith ingenious translations and informative commentaries, Joris and Tengour &#8230; make palpable that this region is a wellspring of the culture we value in the West. In so doing, they restore to us missing parts of the \u2018cradle\u2019 of our civilization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Other recent translations include\u00a0<i>The Meridian: Final Version\u2014Drafts\u2014Materials<\/i>\u00a0by Paul Celan (2011), which was awarded the Modern Language Associations\u2019 2013 Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for a Translation of a Scholarly Study of Literature.<i>\u00a0Breathturn into Timestead: The Collected Later Poems of Paul Celan,<\/i>\u00a0translated and annotated by Joris, is scheduled for a December 2014 release from Farrar, Strauss &amp; Giroux.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A new collection of Joris\u2019s poetry,<i>\u00a0Barzakh<\/i>\u00a0(Poems 2000-2012), will come out from Black Widow Press in 2014. His earlier poetry volumes include\u00a0<i>Breccia: Selected Poems 1972-1986<\/i>\u00a0(1987), and\u00a0<i>Poasis: Selected Poems 1986-1999<\/i>\u00a0(2001). Other notable works include the essay collection\u00a0<i>A Nomad Poetics<\/i>\u00a0(2003) and three volumes of the avant-garde anthology series,<i>Poems for the Millennium<\/i>\u00a0(1995, 1998, co-edited with Jerome Rothenberg; 2012 co-edited with Habib Tangour).\u00a0<i>Publishers Weekly<\/i>\u00a0described Volume 2 of the\u00a0<i>Millennium<\/i>\u00a0series as containing \u201can astonishing amount of exciting poetry [that] freely crosses national and aesthetic boundaries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Joris received the 2005 PEN Award for Poetry in Translation for Paul Celan\u2019s\u00a0<i>Lightduress,\u00a0<\/i>the 1996 PEN Oakland Award for the first volume of\u00a0<i>Poems for the Millennium,\u00a0<\/i>and the 1994 PEN Center USA West Literary Award for Translation for<i>pppppp: Selected Writings of Kurt Schwitters\u00a0<\/i>(1993, with Jerome Rothenberg).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A collection of scholarly essays about Joris\u2019s work,\u00a0<i>Pierre Joris: Cartographies of the In-between,\u00a0<\/i>appeared in 2012.
