Lebanese writer and painter\u00a0Etel Adnan has been named a\u00a0Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters<\/a>\u00a0by the French government, a distinction she shares with artists as varied as\u00a0Terry Gilliam, Shakira, Tim Burton, Elif Shafak, Jude Law, and Philip Glass:<\/em><\/p>\n

Adnan<\/a>, born in 1925, received the award at a ceremony at the Arab World Institute in Paris at the end of January, where the poet, novelist, essayist, and visual artist was given the insignia of Chevalier of Arts and Letters by former French Minister of Culture Jack Lang.<\/p>\n

Adnan is perhaps best known for her classic war novel\u00a0Sitt Marie Rose<\/a><\/em>, which won the \u201cFrance-Pays Arabes\u201d award and has been translated into more than ten languages,\u00a0and her\u00a0In the Heart of the Heart of Another Country,\u00a0<\/em>but she has numerous other collections of poetry, as well as\u00a0theatrical<\/a>\u00a0and other writings.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Adnan\u2019s\u00a0Premonition,\u00a0<\/em>her most recent book, is due out in March 2014.<\/a>\u00a0According to the publisher: \u201cPremonition<\/em>\u00a0is a short book that refuses finality in a world of contingencies and human unpredictability. The only sure place to stand, in this late work of Etel Adnan\u2019s, must be created from day to day in life and art.\u201d It\u2019s a cloth-bound, 56-page book available through\u00a0Kelseyst.com.<\/a><\/p>\n
