In Meditations on the Stations of Mansur al-Hallaj<\/em>, out this year from\u00a0Chax Press<\/a>, Pierre Joris offers his own meditations on the mediations facing his text. In a note occurring after the ninety pages and forty meditations, we\u2019re let in on the procedure. These are translations of Mansur al-Hallaj, a \u201ctenth century revolution poet, sufi teacher & thinker [who was] executed (after much torture) in a Baghdad jail\u201d (91). These are also translations of translations of translations. al Hallaj\u2019s crime, we\u2019re told, was \u201cto have said \u2018ana al-haqqq\u2019 or \u2018I am the truth\u2019\u2014an expression that traditionally names one of the attributes of god\u201d (91). Although in complicating al Hallaj\u2019s claims to the Godhead\u2019s singular linguistic authority, Joris finds his (and by extension our) access to the poet profoundly fractured.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
