I will because he is a great Ghanaian poet.\u00a0 I will because he is a remarkable African thinker and mentor. I will because he traveled to Jamaica from Ghana to bury my father, his dear friend and mentor, in 1984.\u00a0 I will because he is my uncle, my mother\u2019s cousin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Last night, I received news that Kofi Awoonor, the Ghanaian poet, diplomat and academic had been shot to death by terrorists in the\u00a0<strong>Westgate Mall<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<strong>Nairobi, Kenya<\/strong>.\u00a0 I got the news in my hotel, which is about five minutes from the mall.\u00a0 The news came through diplomatic channels in Ghana.\u00a0 \u201cBarring a miracle, we have lost him.\u00a0 Get some sleep, we have a long wake ahead.\u201d\u00a0 This was the note his prot\u00e9g\u00e9 and fellow Ghanaian poet, Kofi Anyidoho, sent to me. The Ghanaian ambassador to Kenya and Awoonor\u2019s son later went to identify the body.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Kofi Awoonor and I were in Nairobi for the\u00a0<strong>Storymoja Hay Festival<\/strong>.\u00a0 I had asked him to attend the festival to help celebrate some new initiatives in African poetry that I was spearheading, and his new book, \u201c<strong>Promise of Hope: New and Selected Poems<\/strong>,\u201d is to be the lead book of the new African Poetry Book Series to appear early next year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He agreed to come and join poets like Nii Parkes, Warsan Shire, Clifton Gachagua, and novelist Teju Cole for\u00a0<strong>Storymoja Hay Festival<\/strong>, a literary festival held each year in Nairobi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I saw him a day earlier than that fateful day.\u00a0 It had been a few years since I had last seen him in Ghana.\u00a0 We embraced.\u00a0 We laughed a lot, sharing witty and biting jokes in sotto voce during an often-amusing press conference.\u00a0 That afternoon he gave hope and encouragement to so many poets and writers who gathered to hear him offer a master class for poets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He did not make the next session.\u00a0\u00a0 The final day of the festival was cancelled, and our final session for Sunday that was to focus on Poetry and Activism was cancelled.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">(&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Below, \u00a0the opening of Kwame Dawes&#8217; article on Kofi Awoonor \u00a0from Speakeasy Magazine.
