On a sunny Monday morning, here are two sudden translations from Goethe’s West-\u00d6stlicher Diwan<\/em>:<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Goethe to Hafiz:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

And if the whole world disappeared<\/p>\n

Hafiz, with you and only you<\/p>\n

I would compete <\/span>. <\/span>Pleasure & pain<\/p>\n

As twins we\u2019d share!<\/p>\n

To love & to drink like you<\/p>\n

That shall be my pride, my life.<\/p>\n

\n

\n

BLESSING-PLEDGES<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>Talisman<\/em> on Carneol<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Is luck & well-being for the believer,<\/p>\n

If on Onyx all the more<\/p>\n

Kiss it with hallowed lips!<\/p>\n

It chases away all evil,<\/p>\n

Protects you & where you are:<\/p>\n

When the engraved word<\/p>\n

Purely heralds Allah\u2019s name,<\/p>\n

It inflames love & deed in you.<\/p>\n

It is women most of all<\/p>\n

Who are edified by talismans.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Amulets<\/em> are similar<\/p>\n

Signs written on paper;<\/p>\n

But one is not as narrowly pressed<\/p>\n

As on the noble stone\u2019s tight edge,<\/p>\n

Thus pious souls are granted<\/p>\n

Here to choose much longer verse.<\/p>\n

Men wear these papers<\/p>\n

Faithfully as scapularios.<\/p>\n

<\/span>The Inscription<\/em> has nothing to back it up<\/p>\n

However: It is itself & has to tell you all<\/p>\n

That in your turn, with honest pleasure,<\/p>\n

You wish to say: I say it, I!<\/p>\n

\n

<\/span>But Abraxas<\/em> I rarely bring!<\/p>\n

Here supposedly the grotesque<\/p>\n

Created by stark madness<\/p>\n

Has to stand in for the highest.<\/p>\n

If I tell you absurdities,<\/p>\n

Just think that I\u2019m bringing Abraxases.<\/p>\n

<\/span>A Signet Ring\u2019s<\/em> difficult to draw,<\/p>\n

It\u2019s highest sense in densest space;<\/p>\n

Though here you know how to acquire<\/p>\n

<\/span> <\/span>a thing authentic,<\/p>\n

Dug in or raised, the word stands,<\/p>\n

<\/span> <\/span>you hardly think it.<\/p>\n
