Like a Straw Bird It Follows Me: and Other Poems,\u00a0by Ghassan Zaqtan, trans. Fady Joudah, has won this year\u2019s international Griffin Poetry Prize:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"straw-bird-joudah-zaqtan\"<\/a>The prestigious Griffin poetry prize is awarded annually in two categories \u2014 international and Canadian \u2014 and each winner receives C$65,000 in prize money. However, in the Zaqtan and Joudah\u2019s case, the award is to be split between author and translator.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Griffin\u2019s 2013 Canadian winner was David McFadden for his collection\u00a0What\u2019s the Score?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Other books on\u00a0the \u201cinternational\u201d shortlist<\/a>\u00a0were:\u00a0Liquid Nitrogen\u00a0<\/em>by Jennifer Maiden,\u00a0Night of the Republic\u00a0<\/em>by Alan Shapiro, and\u00a0Our Andromeda\u00a0<\/em>by Brenda Shaughnessy.<\/p>\n

Straw Bird<\/em>\u00a0was the only translated work on the list. Indeed, this is the first collection translated from the Arabic to have won the Griffin. However, works translated from the Arabic have been on previous shortlists: in 2011, Khaled Mattawa and Adonis were on the shortlist for Mattawa\u2019s translations in\u00a0Adonis: Selected Poems<\/em>, and in 2006, Elizabeth Winslow and Dunya Mikhail were on the shortlist for\u00a0The War Works Hard.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/em>Some 400 people gathered Thursday evening to see the prize awarded.<\/p>\n

The book was published in 2012, and in the fall of last year, Zaqtan and Joudah toured the UK and US. An initial tour, scheduled for spring 2012,\u00a0had to be curtailed when Zaqtan did not receive a visa<\/a>\u00a0from the US government. Zaqtan also briefly had visa trouble with the Canadian government as well, over permissions to attend the Griffin events,\u00a0but that was resolved much more quickly<\/a>.<\/p>\n
