--smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 360\/270;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"justify\"><strong>The Month of Moderns 2013:\u00a0<em>The Gulf (between you and me)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em style=\"font-size: 13px;\">The Gulf (between you and me)<\/em>,<\/strong> a major project that has taken years of planning, brings together composers, a poet, an artist, and a variety of musicians from Japan and America to join The Crossing in exploring a particular theme: how we seem to hear what the earth is saying to us with the same sad inability with which we often listen to those we most love.\u00a0 Luxembourg-American poet\u00a0<strong style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pierrejoris.com\/blog\/\">Pierre Joris<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>has written a three-part poem that will tie the three performances and composers of this project together. \u00a0To get to know all three composers better, we offer ancillary events \u2013 a film and two concerts \u2013 that will give insight to the artists\u2019 work.\u00a0 We welcome\u00a0<strong style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Chris Jonas\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0quartet,\u00a0<strong style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Sun Spits Cherries<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Gene Coleman\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0ensemble of Japanese musicians playing a variety of traditional and contemporary instruments in\u00a0<strong style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Ensemble N_JP<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Saroyan<\/strong>\u00a0wrote, \u201cThe intention of art has always been to deepen, extend, elevate, ennoble, strengthen, and refresh the experience of living. \u00a0It cannot begin to do these things until it accepts part of the management of the\u00a0physical\u00a0life of man, which is now in the hands of inferior men.\u201d Here we make no pretensions toward having answers, we simply aim to sing beautiful, thought-provoking music that is relevant to our lives as we engage art to better understand our world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Each concert features one new work for\u00a0<em>The Gulf (between you and me<\/em>) and several interesting works on related subjects \u2013 how we perceive the natural world around us, how we love it, how it continues to defy and define us, captured by artists today, as throughout the history of art.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The Crossing Presents<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crossingchoir.com\/Concerts_1213_NJP.html\">Friday June 7 @ 8pm<\/a><br \/>\nGene Coleman\u2019s<br \/>\nEnsemble N_JP<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crossingchoir.com\/Concerts_1213_PJ.html\"><br \/>\nSaturday June 15 @ 6:30pm<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crossingchoir.com\/Concerts_1213_TG.html#\">\u00a0<\/a><br \/>\nPierre Joris Reading His Poetry<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Saturday, June 15, 2013 @ 8pm<br \/>\nMonth of Moderns I<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>At The Philadelphia Cathedral<br \/>\n<em>With special guest Toshimaru Nakamura<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.soundfield.org\/\">Gene Coleman<\/a>:\u00a0<em>The Gulf<\/em>\u00a0(world premiere)<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicabaltica.com\/en\/autori\/2648\/piezimes\/\">Santa Ratniece<\/a>:\u00a0\u00a0<em>Chu Dal<\/em>\u00a0 (Silent Water, 2008)<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vcfa.edu\/low-residency-mfa\/music-composition\/tamar-diesendruck\">Tamar Diesendruck<\/a>:\u00a0<em>Other Floods<\/em>\u00a0(2010)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Philadelphia composer\u00a0<strong>Gene Coleman\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0musical language is at times experimental, at other times minimal, often drawing on Japanese influences, improvisation, extended techniques, and Gene\u2019s interest in architecture and structure to create a rich and unique sound world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crossingchoir.com\/Concerts_1213_SSC.html\">Wednesday June 19 @ 8pm<\/a><br \/>\nChris Jonas\u2019s quartet<br \/>\nSun Spits Cherries<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crossingchoir.com\/Concerts_1213_DC.html\">Sunday June 23 &#8211;
