\"PJReads\"<\/a>Born in 1946 in Strasbourg, France, raised in Luxembourg, Pierre Joris has moved between the US, Europe & North Africa for 50\u00a0years, publishing close to 50\u00a0books of poetry, essays, anthologies, plays and translations. \u00a0In 1992 he returned to New York, first the state, where he\u00a0taught poetry & poetics at SUNY-Albany until 2012, \u00a0but also, since 2008, the city \u2014 happily humming Bob Dylan’s “I’m going back to New York City, I believe I’ve had enough…”. When not on the road (see the “Events Calendar” page on this blog<\/a> or on his site<\/a>), he\u00a0lives in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn \u2014 baptized\u00a0Sorrentinostan by him \u2014 with his wife, painter, singer & multimedia performance artist\u00a0Nicole\u00a0Peyrafitte<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Just out are Canto Diurno<\/em><\/a> (a Selected Poems in French with translations overseen by Jean Portante & the author, from Castor Astral);\u00a0\u00a0The Agony of I.B.<\/i><\/a> (a play commissioned & produced in June 2016 by the Th\u00e9atre National du Luxembourg; Editions PHI); An American Suite<\/i> <\/a>(early poems; inpatient press 2016); an online downloadable reissue of the 1974\u00a0chapbook A Single-Minded Bestiary<\/a> by metambesem press in 2015; plus\u00a0Barzakh: Poems 2000-2012<\/i><\/a> (Black Widow Press 2014) & Breathturn into Timestead: The Collected Later Poetry of Paul Celan<\/i><\/a> (FSG 2014).<\/span><\/p>\n

Previous books include\u00a0Exile is My Trade: A Habib Tengour Reader<\/em><\/a> edited, introduced & translated by Pierre Joris (Black Widow Press<\/a>); also in 2012 Chax Press published\u00a0the complete Meditations on the Stations of Mansur al-Hallaj <\/em><\/a>(poems) & the University of California Press\u00a0The University of California Book of North African Literature <\/em><\/a>(vol. 4 in the Poems for the Millennium <\/em>series), co-edited with Habib Tengour.<\/p>\n

Pierre Joris:\u00a0 Cartographies of the In-between<\/em><\/a>, the first comprehensive critical volume dealing with his work, was edited by Peter Cockelbergh, with essays by, among others, Mohamed Bennis, Charles Bernstein, Nicole Brossard, Clayton Eshleman, Allen Fisher, Christine Hume, Robert Kelly, Abdelwahab Meddeb, Jennifer Moxley, Carrie Noland, Alice Notley, Marjorie Perloff & Nicole Peyrafitte &\u00a0published by Litteraria Pragensia, Charles University, Prague, in 2011.<\/p>\n

Other books include \u00a0Paul Celan: The Meridian<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(Stanford U.P. 2011), the e-book\u00a0\u00a0The Tang Extending from the Blade<\/a><\/em>, (poems, 2010) &\u00a0Justifying the Margin<\/a><\/em>: Essays 1990-2006<\/em> (Salt Books).\u00a0In 2008 he published Aljibar II<\/em><\/a> (poems, a bilingual edition with French translation by Eric Sarner, Editions PHI, Luxembourg) and his 2007 publications are the CD Routes, not Roots<\/em><\/a> (with Munir Beken, oud; Mike Bisio, bass; Ben Chadabe, percussion; & Mitch Elrod, guitar) issued by Ta\u2019wil Productions, Aljibar<\/em> (poems, a bilingual edition with French translation by Eric Sarner, Editions PHI, Luxembourg) and Meditations on the Stations of Mansour Al-Hallaj 1-21<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(Anchorite Press, Albany).<\/p>\n

Not so recent but still available books\u00a0include Poasis: Selected Poems 1986-1999<\/em><\/a> and A Nomad Poetics<\/em><\/a> (essays), both from Wesleyan University Press. With Jerome Rothenberg he edited Poems for the Millennium, vol. 1 & 2: The University of California Book of Modern & Postmodern Poetry<\/em>.<\/a>\u00a0Translations furthermore include Paul Celan: Selections<\/em><\/a>, and\u00a0 Lightduress<\/em> by Paul Celan, which received the 2005 PEN Poetry Translation Award.\u00a0 4×1: Work by Tristan Tzara, Rainer Maria Rilke, Jean-Pierre Duprey & Habib Tengour<\/a> translated by Pierre Joris<\/em> came out in October 2002 from Inconundrum Press, and Basic Books published his co-translation (with Ann Reid) of Abdelwahab Meddeb\u2019s The Malady of Islam<\/em> in 2003. Green Integer published 3 volumes of his translations of Paul Celan: Breathturn, Threadsuns<\/em> and Lightduress<\/em>. Other translations include books by Pablo Picasso<\/a>, Maurice Blanchot<\/a>, Edmond Jab\u00e8s<\/a>, Habib Tengour<\/a>, Kurt Schwitters<\/a> and Michel Bulteau<\/a> into English, and by Carl Solomon, Allen Ginsberg<\/a>,\u00a0Jack Kerouac<\/a>, Gregory Corso<\/a>, Pete Townsend, Julian Beck<\/a> and Sam Shepard<\/a> into French.<\/p>\n
