Michel Deguy: A Feast at Eco’s

notre reconnaissance.

The Party at Eco’s

Umberto, your idolon in our memories
a faunesque host reborn mallarmean
enchanting your friends on evening’s pipes
haunted us all that menippean summer
My all too French monoglot mind
said to be escalator wit,
of a strange Stranger, but not from Mantineia,
which has lost the temerity to choir the Banquet
Belatedly salutes the genius of your loci,
the accordion, the Greek fire on the terrasses
the girandoles in the chestnut tree where excelled
the dear miscellany
And pays tribute, even if poor in rimes,
to your art of melting in one mouth
satire and satyre
you who did not delay, as Socrates did, on the [threshold
Martine, enjoying, watched from the shade
her Pandora’s photo-box knew how to catch you
and now how to render your red effigy
and to it our friendship
our gratitude.
